another hint I learned when I took the Cooperative Extension Clothing and Textile class. When needles are made at the factory the hole for the eye is punched from one side, so if you are having problems getting the thread to go through the eye of the needle, turn the needle around. It is amazing that it works!

If it works for you then great but there is no longer a right or wrong end to thread on spools now. Most tangles come from thread lengths over 16" long. Using a short thread length when hand sewing stopped all my tangles and knots.

Happystitcher, thanks for another good use for dryer sheets. Is that a used dryer sheet? Thanks to all the rest of you for your tips. I had no idea about all this. I have never used thread from the bobbin, but I might someday. And I've never paid any attention to which leg of the thread I've tied the knot. This has got to be the most informative board on the web. Thanks to all for sharing.

I have learned a lot from this board too, and appreciate all the help. You are from Saratoga? I have some family close to there and remember that steep hill.
