There has been tons of comments about the Accuquilt GO! fabric cutter. It has a die that will cut the rag quilt squares and you don't have to cut the edges by hand it is all done for you. To late for the one you are making, but you might want to check it out if you are planning on making more. They have many great die cuts.

The accuquilt cutter (? I think this is the one) has a template for cutting these automatically, before piecing.

Pickles 10-12-2010 03:08 PM

Hmm I'm wondering if maybe using electric scissors might work.
I haven't tried it yet but who knows it just might work. :D

So when you use this to pre cut the rag quilt pieces, is it hard to sew seams with edges already clipped?

I have an accut that has a rug cut. If anyone is interested in me cutting your fabric for you let me know [email protected]

Those special rag snips are wonderful. I was given a pair by a friend and it is among my most prized tools ... esp for rag quilts.

The weed whacker idea is from John Flynn.

I take my quilt to the laundromat to wet it and then use their dryer - no heat - to tumble it and get all the lint out. No way do I want to mess up my dryer at home. You'll be surprised at the amount of threads that come off. Then I dry it when it looks nice enough.

by all means get the snips that will make it easier

I invested in a pair of "rag scissors" I think they are called. A short, sturdy blade and fairly large handles. Cuts that fringe like a charm -- I did 3 tee shirts quilts lately and the price of the scissors was worth it. Of course, I hardly ever buy anything w/o that 40% Joan's coupon!

sewin'sam 10-12-2010 06:21 PM

The spring loaded scissors are sooooo much easier. I have a problem with my hands & could NOT make all those cuts with regular scissors. They are worth the price I paid for them! I just made a "Tumbling Blocks" quilt & cut all those hexagons in a couple of sittings. :-D

TerryQuilter 10-12-2010 06:28 PM

I have found if you use one of the large "unsewers" and jab it in just above the seam line and rip up it works much better than scissors and no hand problems or scissors that get funky. :)

I just searched and found where you can order this tool from

if you have the right tool, it makes the job much easier!
go for it

I totally agree! I bought the clippers and they are really, really sharp. That makes cutting thru the flannel a breeze, and the spring helps to keep your hand from getting so tired. Also, take all this advice about only doing one row a day and split that up. Even with the right clippers, this is tedious work.

my snips were only 21,00 at hancocks ,but i saw a small pair at wm last week for8.99

Here is a reference to John Flynns weed whacker method:

It is about the first paragraph under the title which is about 1/3 way down the page.

I use a rotary cutter to cut the chenille bits. It has a guard that slips between the layers and prevents the bottom layer from being cut. It is specially made for this purpose.

My vote is for the rag scissors! They are great! And doing it a little bit at a time. I am working on a "Brickyard" quilt and I am clipping one row at a time before I assemble all the rows.

purplefiend 10-12-2010 08:09 PM

Jodimarie,
I do my rag quilts the way you do too. Lots easier on the hands. I made 4 rag quilts and that was enough for this lifetime.

I do the same thing, after a friend gummed up her machines with all of the lint. I think the larger, industrial machines can do a better job as well.

I can't answer that question with experience, but what I've heard others say on other groups that it is fine. I think they layer the back, batting, and top then cut it that way and they are ready to stitch. Only negative thing I've read is that bits of fabric get stuck down in the die, but the cutter comes with a tool to clear out along the dies if anything gets stuck. Hasn't happened to me with any of my cuts yet.

So when you use this to pre cut the rag quilt pieces, is it hard to sew seams with edges already clipped?

I use my fiskars with a spring. I just looked at the heritage ones though....they look pretty nice...
sound like christmas list time to me!
