Is there an easy way to do these blocks? Help...

The pattern (Safari Fun Pattern Quilt) calls for 40 ea hour glass blocks with 4 different colors....10 ea 5 1/2 squares cut into X's - that would make 160 triangles to sew together...Is there an easier way? I hope

I am not sure but didn't Jenny of MSQC come out with a similar pattern?? You have to be careful because her pattern, the block sides are all bias.

Can you please post a link to the pattern that you are referring to?

If you google quarter square triangles, you will come up with lots of methods. Here's one:

I've just completed a pinwheel quilt and used a method I read about on the forum. Joined the two fabric strips along both length, cut squares from the joined strips, then cut into triangles. It's the first time I've managed to cut triangles without losing points (well I lost one because I trimmed it up without thinking of seam allowance!). It made it so easy.

I'd paper piece them.

that seems like more work than worth...unless they are itty-bitty, then yes, for accuracy. But anything over 2" can be cut and sewn. Not familiar with pattern talked about, maybe onebyone is, so not disputing her response..just adding my thought.

Does sound like quarter square triangles and I think there are a lot of tutorials on the web

You can use this method...just be careful how you make your HST's
if you are using 4 different colours. One HST will be color A & B, the
other will be color C & D. You can even make it faster by making
8 HST's at a time.

Here's one way to make quarter square triangles. Use the first method to make a bunch of HSTs, (use a bit larger than 1" if you are going on to make QSTs from the HSTs) then make the QSTs by the second graphic.

The first grid will make 32 HSTs. These can then be used to make 16 QSTs.

Thanks everyone for ur responses.....I guess what I have to do is two separate quarter square triangles, two colors of one and two colors of the other and sew them all together. That sounds easier than trying to cut all these triangles separately.

I like this blog as she gives a chart for different size units.

Here is a website for the pattern - if this is the one she is talking about. i only see 2 color hst, not 4 so maybe there is another pattern out there.

The Safari one I'm doing has an animal panel in the center and the four color hour glass blocks are around the panel...I found it on "All People Quilt".....

That sounds a little like MSQC Alter Ego quilt. If not the cutting should help.

quiltybarb 05-08-2016 04:40 PM

Thank you Chrisdim...One of the blocks on the Alter Ego quilt is a four color hour glass......I put it on favorites and will watch closely tomorrow.....thanks to much......
