Is there an easy way to do these blocks?

I know how to do an hourglass block by sewing up the middle, cut apart, put together with opposite sides, then sew up the middle again. What about this one? Is there a way to do it like that other than making 4 individual HSTs?
I'm thinking of making a quilt for a co-worker that has 61 of these blocks and that's a WHOLE LOT of HSTs to do. |
Half square triangles

They're all half square triangles. Easy peezy if you know someone with an Accuquilt Go! and a die for HSTs in the size you need. It wouldn't take long to cut the pieces, they would all be accurate, and the dog ears are cut off making pairing very easy.

I have a GO! cutter, didn't think about using it for HSTs. At least they'd be paired with blue/white and ready to sew. Thanks. :)

If you want to, you can use the blue center square as one fabric and sew triangle bits on each corner. It just won't give you the scrappy look.
There is also the method where you sew around two big squares and cut it into multiple HSTs. The problem for me with this method is that the outside of the HST is on the bias. It does make HST construction easy though. Jenny Doan has a tutorial for that on youtube. |
If there will be at least 8 repeats in each color combo, you can use this method. Fast and easy.

I ordered the die, sure I'll use it for other things as well. Isn't that how you amass a good collection anyway?
I am making this quilt since I have lots of 1 yd cuts of batiks and sure that I have at least 5 blues. I asked what color he and his wife like and he said blue. It's a simple pattern that I can do when I just want to work on some easy sewing. |
Wow, thanks for the tutorial link. That's what I was trying to figure out. I know the other method but didn't want bias on them because they are all along the edge.

Jenny at Missouri Quilt Store says to put two large pieces together and sew around the outside edges 1/4 inch and then cut through the middle from one corner to the other where you would have the light for one block and dark color for the other. Then you press them and sew them together on the side. And here is another way to do a lot of 1/2 square triangels.
