The Space Shuttle Program has come to end and with it the age of the transportation to and from the Space Station for the United States.
As Atlantis began her decent across the clear early morning sky on July 22nd, I got up early. 6:57 a.m. EST was touch down, but for me, that mean 6:35ish a.m. I needed to be out and on the lookout.
I stood there and watched Atlantis cross the early morning sky, lit up by the moon and I wondered, in all of those 135 flights into space --- My thoughts were interrupted by the famous “boom – boom.” “The shuttle is here!” one last time.

Did a quilt ever make the journey into space?

Hubby works for NASA. When he gets home I will ask him.

Would have to have been tiny. Every gram of weight was considered so carefully. I still cannot believe we are going to entrust our precious astronauts to another country to get them to the space station and home. So many in FL have lost their jobs because of this. These are highly specialized and trained people that will not easily find replacement jobs and probably not without relocating. Right now am so fed up with everyone in DC regardless of political affiliation that in the words of my 85 yr old mother "I'd like to wrap 'em around a corner" (or slap some sense into them, whichever is most effective). Okay jumping off my soapbox now.

Surely, there was a patriotic quilt put up there (out there?) at some point. If not, we need to make another trip (no offense to any other country) on our OWN! I'm so sad that this era of space flight has ended. :(

There was a quilt in space. The astronaut who made it was a woman. I have a copy of it somewhere, but can't find it. It had a special design on it and she asked that it not be used except on the quilt that went into space. I will look a little harder, but it's getting late, and I may have to do it in the am. I think I saw it on Alex Anderson's tv show.

I remember that show and the lady astronaut. She could fill a small pouch with any personal items she wanted take to space and her quilt block was one of them.
