IS THERE a Perfect Quilt?

Have you ever had a quilt that had no problems from start to finish? I have just started a new one and already have had to take stitches out from 4 blocks. Is there such a thing, or is it like the perfect murder. Just does not exist. :-)

coopah 02-24-2014 07:08 PM

IMHO Eleanor Burns patterns are usually foolproof unless I forget to put on my reading glasses. :o:o:o

In my opinion there is only one and it was created over 2000 years ago. All others contain design elements and other boo boos that make them happy creations with useful intentions.

ragamuffin 02-24-2014 08:35 PM

As far as a quilt goes, I found the easiest quilt I have ever done was the double wedding ring. It went together so easy I just cannot imagine why most people think it is so hard and they are afraid to try it. If most quilts were broken down to the various patches, a lot more would make them. I'm not afraid to tackle anything.

All quilts are PERFECT WITH THERE IMPERFECTIONS!!!

stillclock 02-24-2014 09:59 PM

i agree. every quilt is perfect in its own way.

(except which ever one i am currently working on, which is always an unmitigated disaster...)

Lol, I did a scrappy lap quilt last week as I was bored and I didnt have enough pinks for a full quilt. That darn lap quilt was more bother than any of the king size quilts I made :p i became very friendly with my seam ripper.

Nice quilt notmorecraft. I just got a new 830 Bernina and will think about using a pattern like this to "quilt" the different blocks with different embroidery designs.

Jingle 02-25-2014 05:34 AM

I just finished my 131 quilt and have tried to make a perfect quilt and haven't made one yet. It wouldn't bother me to have to unsew seams or fix mistakes if it would turn out perfect.
In my opinion it is not possible. Might be possible if I made the same pattern a lot of times, would be too boring for me.
They all make me proud to have made them.

Tartan 02-25-2014 05:41 AM

I make perfectly, awesome quilts all the time.....in my head.:D

Quiltngolfer 02-25-2014 06:23 AM

Tartan, you are a hoot! I agree, mine all look so good in my head. It's like in golf. I picture my golf ball flying through the air and landing in the green. When I hit it, it never goes like I pictured. Oh well, quilting and golf are both fun ways to pass the time.

cherylmae 02-25-2014 07:17 AM

I haven't had a perfect one yet, but that is okay. I'm not perfect

ILoveToQuilt 02-25-2014 09:50 AM

From what I've heard, quilters of yesterday used to put a "humility" patch into their quilts to show that no one and nothing is perfect. All of my quilts ARE perfectly perfect....Not! :p

Nothing made by imperfect humans can be perfect. We can only strive for perfection.

ButtermilkMama 02-25-2014 11:31 AM

I have to agree with "coopah". Eleanor Burns' quilts are very easy to make without making a mistake!!!!

Ditto for me!!!

No perfect quilts at my house!

Try making a whole cloth quilt by hand. Few nasty seams to quilt through. No points to match and no seams to stitch through. Mistakes are much easier to remove and repair. You may just fall in love. Using a frame even a large embroidery hoop makes it much easier to handle. No dragging around under the machine. Share time with your family and even watch TV while you work.

tessagin 02-25-2014 02:55 PM

Not made by me and not by one person but there sure are a lot of good looking quilts with a lot of ribbons and a lot of beautiful quilts seen on this board!

Any thing hand made is never perfect but but perfection or not quilts are well loved

As a fellow golfer, I understand completely & share your sentiments. F O R E !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think it was funny that you made the comparison of a "perfect murder" to a "perfect quilt". Sometimes I think I'd like to "murder" or "do in" a quilt I am working on...however when it is finished usually I am pleased with the results. Enjoy the hand applied binding the most, I guess, because that means my quilt is almost finished!

MaryKatherine 02-26-2014 05:09 AM

Some days I think my machine is cursed, or my brain fell out. I NEVER have a perfect anything.

I agree with this statement

jamsbuying 02-26-2014 06:17 AM

Love your scrappy pink quilt, notmorecraft!

kdid82 02-26-2014 06:23 AM

the perfect quilt is always one made by someone else!!

rosiewell 02-26-2014 08:45 AM

well, there may be perfect patterns somewhere, patterns so clear and easy to use that a perfect quilt may be born, you have to be lucky enough to find one and be in the right frame of mind and have your machines, scissors etc cooperate with you. What are the chances?

If you want a technically perfect quilt, buy a machine made one. Even then, if you look closely, there will be some imperfections. Hand-making quilts is artistry and imperfection is part of the artistic endeavor.

Now, let's see if that statement ignites WWIII among quilters. froggyintexas

svenskaflicka1 02-26-2014 08:47 AM

the perfect quilt is the one you're snuggling under. it's done, it's being used, it's doing what it's supposed to do. i figure that things can be perfectly imperfect. keeps us humble.

MargeD 02-26-2014 10:04 AM

To me a perfect quilt is one that is completely finished, binding and all.

jcrow 02-26-2014 10:37 AM

I've made easy, easy quilts where I didn't make any mistakes, but they were boring me to death. I think we need to learn when quilting. Now I'm making more intermediate quilts and find I make mistakes, but I don't mind ripping out pieces because I'm being challenged. Being bored making a quilt is the worst way to quilt. Challenge yourself and you will learn and enjoy through the whole process.

I took Craftsy free BOMs in 2012 and 2013 and I was learning paper piecing, which I was scared to death of trying. It wasn't hard and now it's my favorite way to sew. I learned each month on new blocks and was challenged. I looked forward to the beginning of the month and the new block it entailed.

I think I get lazy and make easy quilts just to have a quilt on hand to give away. Now I am not making very many, but they are teaching me so much. I don't want the perfect quilt. It would be boring.

IBQUILTIN 02-26-2014 11:21 AM

I honestly believe that the perfect quilt has to be "The next one" I know I have said that after every quilt I have finished.

WMUTeach 02-26-2014 02:09 PM

No perfect quilt, no perfect quilters! But all are unique and I am glad to be part of the group of "unique imperfects."

shirleyd 02-27-2014 05:07 PM

I like your lap quilt - very pretty! I certainly haven't made a perfect quilt yet and don't expect I ever will, though it would be nice. And sometimes I can obsess about small mistakes and just have to let it go.:p But it's fun, right? I do enjoy it.
