Thickest fabric for sashing?

I'm making a denim quilt and it has black sashing around each block. I need the thickest black fabric for this, I think? I'm a Moda solids girl and their fabric is thinner than I'd like..... Any suggestions?

One can get black denim.

You could apply a fusible light weight interfacing to the back of your solids to add some weight/ body to your fabrics or try Kona solids or a broadcloth. Wander Joanne's and feel the fabrics/ differences. I would probably just add the interfacing.

Bear, I have some black denim, but I'm askeered of using small strips, the grain and getting the strips straight seems daunting.

CK, great idea, I'll try that. What type of interfacing would you suggest? I only have Misty Fuse and I know that's too light.

I haven't sewn with denim, but I did use some thick decorator fabric in two quilts. I just used bleached muslin without any backing as sashing, and had no problems with the difference in weight. In fact I think that not having seams where two heavy fabrics were joined made the quilt go together much more smoothly, and the seams lay flatter than they would have with two heavy fabrics. The differences in fabric weight weren't visible once the quilt was quilted.

I like to use 1 inch black sashing between denim squares. I use a nice quality fabric but because the finished sewn size is 1/2 inch, the black actually ends up being double thick since the raw edges meet in the center of back of the block. I don't know how wide you plan to do your sashing but this works for me.

Dunster, I might try that, tks.

Tartan, the pattern calls for 1" sashing. Good information. Tks so much. I think I'm going to go with Kona even tho I really don't like that brand, but it is thicker and would work for this quilt.

Maybe look for a cotton poplin - a bit heftier weight than quilting cotton.

I find JoAnn's Kona is a lot thinner/lighter than the Kona I buy at Hobby Lobby.
