Thinking about quilting with sashing.. what order should I do this in?

I was thinking about doing straight lines along the sashing, and then coming up with something more fun for the blocks. I haven't done anything like that before though...

Can I quilt the sashing first, and then do the blocks? Will that cause any problems? Or should I just go block by block or row by row?

I haven't decided if I want to do this at home, or if I want to rent time on the long arm and try out rulers for the first time.

Great quilt, thanks for posting that site. Are you doing the straight or on-point version?
If you are quilting it on your domestic machine, and have secured the layers well, you can do the sashing first, then go back & do the blocks. On a long arm, you would normally do everything at the same pass unless you were using different color threads. Make sure that they have a ruler base on the long arm machine that you are renting. This will ensure that you can use the rulers safely.

You're welcome... I purchased the kit for the on point version here: http://www.fatquartershop.com/on-point-quilt-kit If you are thinking about doing it, hope you like HSTs! I am getting my money's worth out of my Quilter's Magic Wand and Perfect Half Square Triangles rulers with this one. But on the plus side, it is very chain piecing friendly.

Thanks for the tips... I am still on the fence about doing it at home or on the long arm. I will probably end up doing it on the long arm. And they do have ruler bases for the machines.

Love the on-point version.

I like the on-point version too, though both are nice. I often quilt the sashing first on the longarm (whether in the ditches or just within the sashing), to secure the shape and size, then go back and fill in the finer quilting in the blocks. I would also be likely to do that if quilting on a DSM.

However - if you're quilting the sashing first on a longarm and it's the on-point version, you will not be able to get a long straight run through the sashing without either rolling the quilt or zig-zagging. Plan your quilting so that you can zig-zag rather than roll, roll, roll.

I would also stitch the sashing first on this quilt. I quilt on a DSM so start from the center out. I would just SITD in the blocks and then you will be done. Cute quilt. Thanks for posting.

I am also working on this quilt! I purchased the original pattern last year from the designer-I like the on point version much better, but I will have to do the math on my own-I don't want to purchase the pattern again! �� found a cute print for the sashing, and the rest are batiks. Can't wait to see yours!
