Thinking ahead....about borders

1 Attachment(s)
I am slowly getting my Bargello top put together (pattern called Illusion) and am thinking about borders as I labor through all the small details.

The pattern suggests a small inner green border and a black outer border. I was planning on having a light blue inner border and a deep purple outer border, but the more I get into this pattern, I think maybe I should have the outer border black. I think it might make the black background just look "more right."

Now, I know that I won't be able to really tell until I have the center of this finished, but that is probably a week away, and I have to think about something as I sew...so my question is, which way would you lean....outer black border or outer deep purple border. I may need to go buy more black if that is the way I go...

Thanks for any input.

Dina

i agree with the last border being black. i don't think i'd do a light blue first border since the main part reads bold. if you choose an inner border, i'd go with purple. great progress.

I like the idea of the deep green as the inner border since none of it comes to the edge. I think deep purple would look awesome but I'm not a huge fan of solid black borders. The good thing is borders are easy to lay beside the quilt when the body is finished and compare. Your progress so far is amazing! It's going to be gorgeous whatever you choose.

No matter what you choose. This is a beautiful quilt. Great work!

Have you considered using the dark gold, then the black for your borders?
"Audition" several combinations. You'll know which makes your eye happy.

DogHouseMom 06-07-2015 06:33 AM

Start auditioning. Try all of the colors in the quilt in all combinations.

I love that neon blue in the quilt and wondering if that would good as the outer border with a narrow inner border of black.

Dina, do you need a border??? If so, use black. You don't want anything distracting from your lovely piecing.

OMG your quilt is SO beautiful!! Anything you choose will be fabulous with this pattern & the vibrant colors you chose. Excellent job on all fronts!!

Black outer border as a frame. Beautiful quilt!

Marsh 06-07-2015 08:03 AM

Dina - this is absolutely stunning. I have no opinion on borders, just wanting to compliment you on your work and color choices. :):)

Dina 06-07-2015 09:00 AM

Thanks, everyone. I know it is really too early to select borders, but I sure appreciate all the input. I am very anxious to get this center done and then figure the borders out. I will try all the suggestions, probably plus others. :)

Again, thanks.

Yes, Joellyn, I seem to need borders on my quilts. Otherwise a quilt just doesn't seem right to me.

This quilt is STUNNING! I love love the colors and the pattern! Everything. I unfortunately don't have any advice just compliments! LOL. Whatever you decide will be perfect I'm sure. Please make sure to post finished pics for us!

I'm with DogHouseMom, a narrow black border to set the background and then a colored background. I like the neon blue as well for the outer border but one of the purples would also work. I wouldn't use the green myself as there is so little of it in the piece. But as others have said, audition a number of options and pick the one that works best for you.

janedee 06-07-2015 09:40 PM

That is an amazing quilt, your colour choice is superb. If it were mine I would put a black border and nothing else.

justflyingin 06-08-2015 07:09 AM

It's gorgeous! I'm sure whatever you decide will be perfect. No help here..you're doing fine all by yourself!

I just made a Bargello with the same (or similar pattern & colors) and I used a black fabric for the border but it had a light gray pattern in it--here's a picture so you can see what it looked like. I used burgundy for the thin border because I didn't have enough of the green that I wanted to use.

Dina and Bobbie, those are beautiful! I hope to some day try this pattern. I really like the quieter color for the inner border as it compliments the pattern. The black border is totally necessary for the outer border. I love the neon blue but I would not choose it for a border as I think it might distract from this wonderful quilt. JMHO

Beautiful quilt. I would go with a black border just to frame that gorgeous quilt, with maybe a narrow deep purple border, then the black.

Bobbie, your quilt is beautiful!!! Wow! The black border looks very good. I can't wait to get mine finished enough to really play with borders, but I am currently pretty convinced that the outer border needs to be black. Thanks for the picture!!

Your quilts are both stunning! I've never had the desire to do a Bargello but seeing yours, I may have to reconsider! Would you share the pattern you used? Thank you!

The pattern I used is Illusions by Dereck Lockwood. It is not an easy pattern. I won't do another like it, though I will do more Bargellos. My first Bargello was Surf Song from a book by Eileen Wright, Twist and Turn Bargellos. Her instructions are very good and there is a placemat in this book that is designed to walk a quilter through the organization needed for a Bargello. There are ten other patterns in the book.

Anyway, I will attach a picture of mine, in case it is of interest to you. It was a good quilt for me to start with, Bargell0o-wise.

That's very pretty too...do these patterns give you color suggestions or you chose your own?

AngeliaNR 06-10-2015 06:44 PM

Really beautiful, Dina. I have to wait to decide on borders--I have to SEE it when the quilt is done--plus, oftentimes at that point, the quilt will tell me what it wants.

Hi, Hot Rod! :)

Both of these patterns give good color suggestions. The Illusion pattern actually shows you what fabric to select, but I sort of went with my own. I wanted to use fabric from my stash. Surf Song tells you to select two color families, and I think it asked for 10 or 12 shades of each color. I also did that in blue and yellow. (I always add white because I like the way it looks in a Bargello...) Let me see if I can find a picture of it. I enlarged that quilt a bit, and it sort of elongated the design, but I still like it.

Hi, Hot Rod! :)

Hot Rod says "hi" back!! Yes, I decide on my borders later too, but I am REALLY tired of working on this one. I want to figure out my borders!! And I know I really can't do that yet. But, ya know, the quilt just never speaks to me. I end up cutting strips of several colors and laying them on my design wall. I have to actually see it in front of my face to decide.

Maybe in a week I will be there. Cross your fingers for me.

All these bargellos are SUPER!! I agree with the black choice....

nunnyJo 06-11-2015 05:28 AM

beautiful quilt, I would do small purple to efine the purple and frame in Black. awesome

JanBech 06-11-2015 06:13 AM

Wow, is this ever gorgeous! I think I would definitely go with a black outer border. For the narrower inner border, I would audition the blues and purples, and choose one of those.
