I knew my stained glass quilting projects were not going to be easy, but...
The stained glass quilts I'm doing are based off the stained glass windows found in Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. There's 6 windows depicting the sages from Ocarina of Time, two windows of the Triforce (which are the same), and one depicting Ganon's rise to power in OoT. So 7 in total, 8 if I make both Triforce windows. After trying to get images of the windows the hard way by taking video of the gameplay, making screenshots, and unsuccessfully trying to piece together the windows I wasn't able to view in one shot...I found images of the sages on ZeldaWiki. Luckily the Triforce and Ganon windows were ones I was able to view the whole window in first person mode and didn't have to view in sections. I'm thinking "Well, this just got a lot easier!" Not exactly. Today I tried matching some of the fabrics. I had printed one of the images out to see how they'd fare when enlarged (they were small) and counted the number of colors on that one....there were seventeen colors. 17!!! The one I tried matching marbled fabrics to has 14 colors. I spent two hours trying to find fabrics that matched the color. How many colors out of fourteen did I actually match? Five. Okay, technically four...the fifth is the black leading. You'd think with all the green marbled fabrics Moda has to offer that I would of had more matches, but only four were exact matches. Couldn't find anything close to match the other shades of green. Ugh, I never want to see green again at the moment. At least I got the color for the skin tone on that one...there are two other sages with a light skin tone so hopefully that fabric will match for them. And then there's this bad boy: the Ganon window. [IMG]http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q.../Ganoncopy.jpg[/IMG] I lost count at 17 colors...can't remember if that was including the black or not. Oh, why must I always pick the most difficult projects that will test my sanity and deplete huge amounts of chocolate? |

sounds like you're trying to do exact matches and that does take time. Consider instead just looking at the contrast between the similar fabrics...for example, there are three shades of blue in the top of the Ganon window (for the sea). Instead of working on the exact shade of blue, look at what contrasts nicely to give the general look. Once the quilt is done I doubt that anyone will spend time comparing the original with the quilt to see if you found the exact match.
Also, to make it easier, insteading of adding leading on top of the colors, have you thought of doing raw edge applique and leaving a bit of the black background showing between the pieces? The overall look is the same, and it's much easier. Challenges are good, and I"m sure you'll get it done and it will be beautiful. |
I love the Zelda games and love quilting, but wouldn't ever attempt what you are doing!
