Thinking of Making a Quilt

I want to make this quilt and I know how big I want it to be, 74 in. by 98 in. The colored squares are going to be 10 in by 10 in, and then the black in between will be 2 in by 10 in. How many yards of each color should I get based on those measurements? (I'm horrible at math, otherwise I would have figured this out on my own.)

Thank you! I estimated about yard for the colors and then the black I estimated 2 yards, so I wasn't very far off. Thank you! :D *hugs*

Yes, I am. I'm hoping to do this as a summer project.

I would recommend buying 2/3 yards instead of 5/8. You need 21 inches. 5/8 is only 22.5 inches, so if the fabric isn't perfectly square, you might be short. 2/3 will give you 24 inches, that "should" be enough compensation for the cutting being off, for only pennies more.

This sounds like "higher math" to me. Araid I can't be of any help!

These quilting board members are awesome - and super smart! Love it that we can come here with any question we have!

When you go the fabric store, ask them to measure the usable width (between the selvedges) of the fabrics you choose for the big squares. To cut 4 squares across, which the yardages require, you will need 42" of usable fabric. If you don't have that much, you will need another 11" of each fabric for the big squares, which put you just shy of a full yard.
