Thinking? Rug/Quilt
 

I was just thinking that I need a throw rug for my bedroom. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a rug quilt that one can make to use on the floor. Then what type of fabric would one need to use to make the rug quilt. Has anyone made a throw rug quilt or even heard of a pattern for one?

there are quite a few! in fact there is a book out there- I think it is called 'Floor Quilts' . I make lots of rugs- I hook wool rugs, locker hook cotton rugs (all using narrow strips of left over fabrics- I've made (patchwork) rugs with 'recycled' denim (cut up old jeans) for the backing and felted wool for the top; a couple I've used a fairly heavy canvas like cotton backing- some I've used warm & natural batting in, some I have not- sky is the limit! if you can 'envision it' you can create it. :)

I made a quilt runner for my foyer. It's 4 ft by 8. I sewed a waffle rug backing to the back of the runner. The wool runner I had was beautiful but hard to keep clean. I matched the colors of the rug in a simple block design with thin poly batting. I can toss it in the washer and have a fresh clean entry rug all the time.

Thanks for posting this question. I had a friend ask me if I made rugs after she saw one of my quilts and I was confused by her question. Never made the connection between the two before that! Will have to give it a little more thought......

I've been wondering the same thing! I'm working on a sewing room move & remodel and could use a long rug for in front of my new cabinets. I was thinking maybe an outdoor fabric for the top and canvas for the back? With a couple layers of batting for cushion. (probably poly...?) It just seems like it'd be appropriate to have a handmade, quilted rug in my sewing room!

But first I have a ton of furniture and "stuff" to move from my upstairs room. Urg. I wish I had an elevator!

I have cut fabrics in strips and crochet them into what I call rag rugs but I don't that the flannel quilts that are called rag rugs would work on the floor. Maybe work with denim like fabrics.

A friend of mine makes drop dead gorgeous quilted throw rugs doing a layered reverse applique, raggy edged. They are beautiful and very durable due to the multiple layers of fabrics in them.

I have started sewing selvages across half a towel for pretty bath rugs. They are great for stepping onto out of tub or shower. Now working on one with strips, not selvages and just move on down the towel. So far no problem with slipping but we have always just used towels on floor after bath/shower so must automatically adjust.
