do you use batik for backing, too? if not, what?

I saw the batik quilt backing fabric at Hancocks of Paducah last weekend for about $20 per yard - did not notice just exactly what the width was though. I just noticed they mostly had the "blenders" in that wide backing - nothing too wild.

Yes, I have used batik for the backing along with batik on the front. I quilted a quilt for a customer, the top was denim and batik on the back. no problem

I've used any cotton fabric that had similar colors or white muslin. They all turned out just fine. I prewash all my fabric so if it was going to shrink, it already had.

the reason i asked is b/c i have a quilt & the front is a mix of batiks & cottons, & i'm not sure if i should use batiks on back or not--

You could use either.

sort of seems like a waste to put some awesome batiks on the back----maybe i should just put something UGLY on the back.....hehe

Those beautiful batiks on the back might make it a reversible quilt. That would be cool.

i wouldn't know how to act w/ a reversible Q!

If you are going to hand quilt, I'd use a coordinating quilting cotton for the back. If it's to be machine quilted, a batik would be fine, but something like a Moda Marble or Northcott's Stonehenge would be a lot less expensive and still "go".

I saw Batik flannel on sale yesterday at Hancocks! Would make a nice backing.

i love using the wide batik's regular ones and flannel ones they make awesome beautiful backs. shop around they can be found at much less than $20 a yard. but what you put on the back of your quilt is your personal preferance, use what you like. batiks really up the cost of the quilt (and value) they are beautiful!
i did buy a 3yd batik wide backing one time then hemmed it and use it for a sheet...i just couldn't put it on a quilt. everyonce in a while when i'm making the bed i will think i should put it one the back of a quilt but, it stays a sheet:)

http://www.thousandsofbolts.com They don't have a large choice of colours, but even so... I have just finished a Dear Jane quilt that I made with batiks and a natural cotton, and I'm backing it with a wide natural cotton.

"should" is not the correct word. Use whatever pleases you.
I like to use wide backing so there are no seams. However, recently I did a 50" wide quilt and had enough of one of the top prints for back (length) but was not wide enough so I had another of the top prints and sewed a 12" strip down the center for the back. So use whatever you like if you want it to blend with the back.

the wide batiks are usually a little more loosely woven than the 45" so is easier to quilt.

I've done them both ways. Either is fine.

I make alot of batik quilts and they are 100% cotton also.
so it really doesn;t matter which you use.
I generally use batik as I like the look, but it is up to you.

Sis just got a bunch of 108 backing from Marshalls. We are set for life. Seriously. 18 bolts of 6 yards each. I will be buying from her as I am not overly fond of piecing a back. I have done it, but I like the look of a one piece.
