For those of you that embroidery.....

How / where do you store all your thread?

I use plastic drawer units. The ones for scrapbooking paper hold the small ones and the deeper drawers hold full sized ones. I had the stands and they worked, but your thread gets all dusty.

mpspeedy2 11-28-2013 05:35 AM

I have most of mine stored in plastic lidded boxes made for that purpose. They have pins to hold each spool. I also have an antique cabinet with 6 shallow drawers that are just right for the skinny spools to lay down in. It even has a little window on the front of each side of the long drawer that holds a little card to indicate what color thread is in their section. I probably have a thread collection that cost a thousand or more dollars. I don't embroidery nearly as much as I used to. I will admit I am lazy and hate to keep changing the thread. I have gotten in the habit of using variegated thread for most of the embroidery work I do now. My youngest grandchildren are now 16 and I have given up hope that I will have any grandchildren from our youngest daughter. Most of my clothing that I embroidered over the years I am still wearing. I actually own two stand alone embroidery machines. The first is Bernina's original one and the second is a Brother that uses the same PES format. I have a small fortune tied up in software some of which I have never used. I don't care for sewing machines that can be converted to embroidery as I can not sew while they are doing that task. With my present set up I can be embroidering two things while still sewing on something else.

I use a plastic drawer unit.

LTeachergeorge 11-28-2013 07:37 AM

I'm not so organized as many, uh -- most, members of the board, but I keep mine sorted by maker (Robinson Anton, Sulkey, etc.) in zip lock bags. I usually just choose colors by sight, unless I'm doing counted cross stitch.

I have only ever hand embroidered and purchase an organizer specifically for that. Tried to come up with something different but for the money and time saved, I just purchase the organizer inserts.

newbee3 11-28-2013 08:49 AM

I keep all my threads in drawers I have a filing cabinet that has drawes in it. I keep my regular sewing thread in my sewing cabinet. I also have some plastic drawers I picked up at salvation army that I use for my quilting thread. I also keep all my fabric in cabinet or on shelves in totes plus there are doors on the cabinets and a curtain on the shelf to keep out the light.

fairydawn 11-28-2013 09:10 AM

I have mine on a wall rack that I keep next to my machine.

RedGarnet222 11-28-2013 09:53 AM

I use a five drawer plastic unit that I bought at walmart. I also buy the connecting threads quilting thread so I had to have a couple drawers for that.

lynnie 11-28-2013 10:18 AM

they make plastic carries with slots to put your wound thread in you wrap your threads onto 1" x1" plastic bobbins and then put about 5 of theminto the slot. I got mine about 20 yrs ago at a crafatstore

Pennyhal 11-28-2013 10:49 AM

I stored my threads so well that I can't find them!

davis2se 11-28-2013 11:22 AM

I have 2 of the really large (maybe 60 spools) thread boards - the kind that can stand on a table or be hung on the wall. I hung them one under the other on my wall and have my thread arranged by color. But, the spaces between the pegs that the spools sit on are not quite wide enough to accommodate the thread spool bases, so I stagger the spools, on top side up, one top side down, etc.

ro 11-28-2013 11:28 AM

pennyhal you made me chuckle. if i clean up, i'll never find it again. so the answer is......don't clean up. have a great thanksgiving.

I wanted mine to hang on wall but because we live in rental hubby was none too pleased with that thought. He has a 3D printer and printed up some spool holders that stick with the 3M strips so they come off and leave no mark. Sorry for the horrible color my walls are tan and the light seems yellowish.

I use the craft boxes from Joann's with the good handles and catches. My thread won't sit on the small thread spools in the box so I just discard those.

I mainly buy the 1100 meter cones in sets. I keep the sets separate, and label the boxes as 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3 and the name and type of the thread. I travel in a motorhome & take my sewing/embroider combo with me. It's very convenient to be able to pick up the 3 boxes and know I can make just about any pattern.

elaine708 11-29-2013 12:26 AM

I use a cabinet for mine. Flat file cabinets work great for threads as well as hoops and stabilizers.

bjeriann 11-29-2013 12:44 AM

I use the thread holders that hang on the wall or can set on a shelf. I hang them on the inside of my closet. They stay clean and out of the sun.

weezie 11-29-2013 04:58 AM

I have a lot of embroidery thread; the different sizes/brands either came in storage cases or I bought specific sized cases for them when I bought the thread. The biggest cones (5000m) I store in 2 large plastic boxes under my bed. If you buy Madeira thread already in storage units, such as the 3-drawer one that is advertised a lot, the thread is color sorted and that sort of gives me fits when I'm looking for a specific numbered thread; therefore, all the rest of my thread (which is most of it) I have sorted by number. I have typed sheets of the color numbers and where they are stored, so when I pull the colors for a design, I check the sheets to see if (a) I own that color and (b) where it is stored. I can't emphasize enough how much time that saves me.

I have always kept my threads in a suitcase, out of any kind of light and dust. Sure it can be a bugger some times, but The wooden spools still have thread that is good and strong.

Bonnie 11-29-2013 05:16 AM

Picked mine up at Wal-Mart, individual spools and lidded to keep the dust out (not to admit that I have any dust). Cost a few years ago was 5.00 each. A friend used the plastic boxes for the little cars and they worked good too. The ones at the craft stores are just too expensive.....

Krystyna 11-29-2013 06:18 AM

I have three plastic scrap booking drawer units on wheels. They work well.

cjaneky 11-29-2013 06:21 AM

guess i'm just cheap, i use the bucket style plastic ice cream buckets and mark on the outside if the thread is black , white or multi colored thread !!!

sosew4fun 11-29-2013 09:48 AM

I use the plastic match box car carriers found in the toy dept at walmart. they are sturdy and cheap but will hold spools on each side. I use mainly maderia thread and they fit the slots. Some other brands might be too wide to
fit. I have each box sorted by color. I do use the larger spools for basic colors that I use for a lot of logos and keep
them in larger plastic boxes .

I use two kinds. These are Floriani cases and the other ones I use are the clear plastic thread cases.

Carol34446 11-29-2013 01:16 PM

All my thread is stored in plastic boxes, bought some at WM before they quit carrying them and then got two from connecting threads that are double sided. So dusty here with the dogs and our sugar sand this keeps them clean. Have boxes labled by coloror colors and it works out as I can take boxes where I am sewing, not having a sewing room.

Ccorazone 11-29-2013 01:50 PM

I go to the sporting goods department and buy those boxes meant for the plastic fishing worms. They are just the right length for a the new floss and when on a bobbin they are just wide enough to fit inside. I have many, many boxes such as this because years back when Walmart was closing out this type of inventory, I bought two to three of each color for ten cents each. I ended up with lots and lots of thread. Plus, when my sister passed and I got her thread.

Do you mean machine embroidery or hand embroidery. My recent post was about floss for hand embroidery.

Thread Storage

I purchased these a couple of years ago at our local flea market and got all for around $ 12.00.They work great for me and as you can see they will also store those other things that you use for machine embroidery like your neb bobbins, stitch eraser, mylar, ect. Please excuse the mess of threads as I have been machine embroidering Christmas presents for almost 2 months now. You can purchase something close to this at JoAnn's and use your 50 % coupons.

I keep mine in a dresser drawer. Here's my thread inspector checking it out.

Weezy Rider 11-30-2013 06:40 AM

Bernina was selling boxes. I like OESD thread. Fit their cones and the smaller Robison Anton. I bought those, and keep them in a cabinet with doors out of the light.

Quilty-Louise 11-30-2013 06:52 AM

I use a metal drawer cabinet on casters that I got from IKEA
they cost $39.99 and has 6 drawers. Each drawer is the perfect
height for the embroidery thread.

I have 2 silver, 1 red and MOST of the drawers are full of emb. thread.

Here is a link to the cabinets I use.

What a GREAT idea!!

bjgallent 11-30-2013 08:07 AM

I love the plastic drawer units. I even have all the reds together, etc. Not that organized in other things but do so for the thread.
