Jan in Va...thanks for the info!

I have gone to pulling 2 or more threads to square the fabric and then cut it on the mat and not use the lines on the matt. My quilting looks a lot better and the blocks are square.

Jan, I really appreciated the 'teacher' information you responded with. This is still a great site for learning from one another. Thanks! It reminded me not to count on the lines and as I'm teaching someone the rudiments of using rotary cutting tools, this is very useful.

Thanks for the heads up re cutting mats. First thing you should do is check the measurements on any quilting tool to see if they are really what they say they are. I have the Alto quilt cut 1 which I love and also the large 36 inch mat from Olfa, and both of them are spot on.:)

So glad you found your mind! LOL! thanks for the "heads up" alert, I didn't know that measuring tools might not be reliable either. Hancock's needs to know how bad these particular cutting boards are. Maybe they will also make some small gesture to make amends for the frustrations and messed up projects this cutting board caused.

I'm so glad that you had the where-with-all to check the ruler on the mat. Lesson to self. Check any new ruler against ruler you know is correct.

I was told never use the mat, always use your rulers. but if you have to use the mat, you have to use it for the entire project, no switching between the 2.

I have Olfa brand rulers that are not right ,I am going to be making a call much easier then flying back to where they came from .

Thanks for this information. My cutting board needs replacing and I am glad to know about this!

I agree with Jan in VA that is exactly how I teach my students as well. Use 2 rulers to square the fabric and then use the lines on the ruler to cut the fabric. The mat lines are to aid in visual lining up not meant to cut with! Luann in CTs
