it has occurred to me during the past hour that the joke may very well be on our "visitors". they have obviously spent a great deal of time going through every section, reading a lot of posts. that's the only way they could have gotten to know us well enough to sneak in and create posts that might be real ... might be not.

they are working a lot harder at this than we are. maybe some juvenile probation office sent them our way to keep them busy and off the streets for a while.

if we keep our wits ... and our collective sense of humor ... about us, WE will have the last laugh.

after all ... they all have to go back to school (or their juvenile detention center) sooner or later, and we'll still be here having a good time.

Very true Patrice!! Some where down the road one may even have the uncontrollable desire to quilt something and have no idea why!! Ahhh the ultimate revenge!! We can teach em something without them knowing!! :) Perhaps, maybe how to be a creative  adult!!

patricej 07-24-2008 03:26 PM

well ... if you know how to do that, practice on me, please.

wait a minute ... i wouldn't mind being more creative ... but to heck with being an adult. i've avoided it this long. why rock the boat?

sewnsewer2 07-24-2008 03:33 PM

What is a troll?

patricej 07-24-2008 03:48 PM

we had some unwelcome "visitors" to the board last week. goofball posts that ranged from simply stupid to truely foul and obscene. apparently, the ... people? .... who do such things are known on the web as trolls.

who knew? until last weekend, i thought trolls either lived under bridges or in doll collections from the 70s.

LOL ok..well more creative works.

sewnsewer2 someone who is a less than polite on message boards to feed their own amusment on the discontent of the message board members. They really are just best ignored. If we let them get to us, then they indeed win. I personally don't like losing so, I choose to ignore them and not gratify them with responses. They eventually get bored and move on to other poor souls on other message boards.

Its really a sad deal because these arent juveniles! At least the originals werent. I still have the link to the original attack that the "Turncoat" posted. They thought it was pretty hillarious!!! And we arent the only ones they attack.

Knot Sew 07-24-2008 04:19 PM

Well they did learn how to get the poop smell out...they can apply it to mouth wash

ScubaK 07-24-2008 04:19 PM

Here is a great "link" that explains:

I swear! I'm so out of it. I had no idea that some of the rude things I've seen (and I think I must have missed the really bad ones) were trolls. I thought they were just people with bad manners and poor people skills. Which is a troll, I guess! :) I just ignored them and moved on.

sewnsewer2 07-24-2008 05:16 PM

I thought that's what a troll was, I saw the posts.

Thanks!

ScubaK 07-24-2008 08:23 PM

Some people have to much time on their hands and want to be hurtful and malicious...
I don't have time nor patience for that.

I guess they didn't really know us that well, though, because we know that our real quilt family would not try to say anything on here that would offend or hurt another, and that we know the others wouldn't want to. Did I make sense?

Yep! I haven't been a member for very long, but I have noticed the closeness and kindness that exists here. It's a very nice place to be. :-)

gcathie 07-24-2008 09:37 PM

I totally agree with CissyQuilts.....I was on a site ...new to it and they had a similar thing happen...like you said Partrice you have to ignore them that is what they did....they just want attention....guess they don't have any quilts to post.... :D .....sure glad you are on top of things....i just barely caught one of the sites...when I read it I thought that don't sound like anybody on here...we don't behave like that...so I didn't respond....now I am trying to be a little more careful....I love this site though and I hope things don't change.... :D

Barb M 07-24-2008 11:02 PM

Patrice, i've been trying to figure out if every new person on the uhmm lol poopy thread was a troll, even the one the said why are you being unfriendly, i've been trying to figure out if they were all trolls or just some of them. Do you know Patrice? I'm getting the idea that they are being not as obvious this time around, like you say, so it's hard to tell

Izy 07-24-2008 11:09 PM

Barb....Like you at first I thought they were genuine....then the messages start to get abit weird....just use your judgement...the trouble is we are all so 'comfortable' with each other, we have relaxed our guard, and believe instantly that every person is genuine, sadly for the time being, read everything twice and think before you respond...its the only way as these 'people' are just getting their kicks out of upseting our routine and chamaraderie

Barb M 07-24-2008 11:36 PM

I could see somethig was off on that thread, even the person that started the thread was brand new, i just didnt know if all the new people on the thread were part of this, or just some of them

Bevanger 07-25-2008 04:53 AM

why would trolls hurt us? its not like we're sharing patterns. we show our OWN stuff.

Izy 07-25-2008 04:57 AM

Bev - How I understand it is this...these people are not interested in quilting - they want to just infiltrate the board 'pretending' they are interested...then they get offensive to try and upset people basically this is what they get off on....there are also other meanings for certain phrases which we will take in niaively at face value, but believe me you DON'T want to know what 'they' are referring to it's quite sickening. If you are still unsure as to what I might be referring PM me and I will send you more detail!!

Your fine hun. I'm just used to a different kind of troll. For yrs I was in and out of Crochet & Cross Stitch Groups. There would always be a troll warning cuz they would snoop and try to close us down. Many of my groups I was in landed up going private. You had to be invited.

reneebobby 07-25-2008 05:54 AM

Wow I missed it must have been on the weekend when I don't do e-mail or computer anything. Sorry that we were hit by them darn trolls. :x

nor'easter 07-25-2008 05:55 AM

Bev, read the thread on General about trolls http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/9428.page

Siren9patch 07-25-2008 07:55 AM

I hate trolls as much as anyone and I am glad to see that you ladies are about to take an ounce of poo-poo from any of them.
However, I also believe that some of you might be a wee bit paranoid and deleting posts with reckless fervor, as was the case is several of my postings, does not make for a very friendly atmosphere.
Sometimes, you just have to relax and let a thing or two slide. Otherwise, you're bound to drive new members away.

yoya_english 07-25-2008 06:47 PM

This news to me :!: I must be getting behind on the computer search or
something  lol what things or persons can do to hurt others. I enjoy
this quilting group---funny, intelligent and very kind people. I don't always
have time to get on the chat group or just plain busy on the home front.

Thanks for the info and I keep reading on and learning from you all :D
hugs----yoya

i don't delete with reckless fervor. neither does Admin. we've let some pretty "outrageous" comments remain untouched. it's a matter of trying to maintain that tricky balance between freedom of speech, a sense of humor, and understanding human individuality and imperfection while not letting things to too far, get too gross, too vulgar, too potentially hurtful, or become too likely to start really ugly arguments.

i've deleted comments from close friends. heck ... i've even deleted myself a few times. it's all about what's best for the collective - never about one, two, or a very few individuals. i don't regret my choices and i don't apologize. however, if i think the "offense" was most likely accidental, i do send a pm to explain for that person's information and future reference. we are great believers in second chances.
