Thread for Bernina
Have just received a 530 Bernina and am wondering what brand of thread you use? I have been told to buy "good" thread but with all prices involved, am wanting to make a wise choice. Thanks.

I use Star thread.

i used the guttermans thread on my 640 bernia. but lately i am going with
the 3 ply superior thread. my machine really likes that. i was told the same thing when i bought mine a year ago. |
My Bernina sews well with all threads!
|
I prefer Mettler. It's all cotton.

Try a variety and see what you like. Just because a thread cost more doesn't make it better. If you have a quilt show you can go to thats a good place to buy thread at a good price. I use Aurifil; my favorite for piecing. It's low lint, strong and since it's only two ply when I have a lot of seams in a block my block comes out to the right size more than when I use a 3-ply thread. I also use Connecting Threads thread and have had no issues with it. I have an embroidery unit too and for that I use Sulky, RA, Jenny Haskins, Floriani, Prencia, and a few others. I wouldn't buy a low grade thread to make something that I wanted to last. I have lots of thread that is really old and I use that to hand baste or on my machine when I'm practicing on something or testing out stitches, trouble shooting. I know that some have said that their machines don't like certain threads, I've not had that experience. I figure if I own a 10,000 machine it should take what ever thread I give it and my Ruby did and my Viking Diamond Deluxe does. I thought I had issues with the cone thread once and after pulling my hair out, I finally read up on it and changed the size and type of needle to the project that I was working on and it went well after that. Just buy what you can afford and test them out. With sewing machines like other things in life; what works well with one person/machine may or may not work with the next one.

My Bernina 200E works well with all threads, I clean the fuzz after every project if the thread produced some.
|
I use all threads, especially Connecting threads, thread!

I have finally figured out it's not the thread that causes problems it's the wrong needle size that causes 99% of my thread problems. I have an older Bernina, 1260, and can use all brands and types of thread. I prefer a very thin thread for piecing for both top and bobbin. I don't care if it is cotton or poly as long as it's at least 60 wt.
|
My Bernina sews well with whatever thread I throw at her. The only time I had a problem was with an expensive spool of YLI varigated thread for machine quilting. It formed a little lint ball behind the needle eye and broke. My favourite for piecing is Aurifil.

The only thread my Bernina balks at is some BLACK threads.
|
I have 440 QE , and can use any thread cheap expensive and sparkle. My friends machine will only use good thread it is a bernina 440. So try all the suggestions and find the best for your machine.

Matching the needle to the thread makes a huge difference. |

My Bernina dealer basically told me if I don't use Mettler, Isacord, and Aurafil my machine will blow up (oddly, these are what they sell!!!). I haven't found that to be the case at all. I do use those threads, but I also use Dual Duty and Connecting Threads Essential. Essential is my favorite for piecing, Isacord for quilting and embroidery.
My machine has run great with every thread I've tried. |
I use all threads in my 15 yr. old Bernina. I still have thread from my sister thats over twenty years old and as long as it doesn't break when I tug on it, I use it. I do like to piece with aurifil.

Superior Masterpiece 3 ply for quilting is loved by my Bernina and all our vintage machines. Nice weight for piecing.
|
I have a Bernina 640 and all thread works for me. I use Connecting Threads thread but it is a bit linty.
|
I have Bernina 640. My favorite piecing thread is Superior's Masterpiece. It is available on a large cone. I use this thread on all my vintage Singers and they like it also. It has very little lint.

I have used a variety of threads on my Berninas.

If one pays thousands of dollars for a sewing machine, it sure darn well sew with any sewing machine thread. If it doesn't, you shouldn't buy the machine. My Mom's White treadle sewing machine sewed with any thread she used. I have a Bernina, and I've used many brands of thread. I don't use the 10 spools for a dollar thread, but, any other sewing thread works fine. I have heard of other sewing machine dealers telling their customers to only use Brand X, which just happens to be the brand that they sell. If a sewing machine dealer tells you to use only certain brands, walk away from the dealer as fast as you can. A sewing machine should be able to sew with any reputable brand. I have read on this board, that some people won't use Coats and Clark sewing thread. Really? This is a company that has been in business for decades, but suddenly it itsn't good enough? The best way is try various thread brands and see which ones you like.

I have used the dreaded coats and clark thread for machine embroidery as well as gutterman and sulky. I also try to clean the bobbin area of fuzz frequently.
