I also am having problems.. I want to get a top stitch needle ... I am using embroidering threads... what size do I use on the top stitch needle and what thread do ya'll recommend?

I got so confused that i googled it and ytube says all brother machine needles go with the flat part to the back. I can,t get mine in like that. It seems to go to the right side. Am i mad or not? What thread would you use? I tried cotton, or a cottonized poly and the lint was tremendous. Also it shredded the thread. however, that was with another needle. what threads do ya'll use for FMQ on the 1500s ?

I have the 1500SE. I have gone to using Glide threads in my machine. I have had less breakage and it has a great finish.

I only did a couple of quilts on my 1500 before I got my longarm. I used a 12 or 14 topstitch for piecing, 16 or 18 topstitch for quilting. The topstitch has a larger eye and longer scarf, both of which help reduce friction on the thread. I used Bottom Line for both piecing and quilting. It's a 60 wt poly.

My 2 Brother 1500SE has been a dream for ~20 yrs. My usual threads are Aurifil and BottomLine. Have used metalic. Also used Razzle Dazzle in the bobbin. Have used 60 to 12 wt thread. No problems.
As to needles, it's Schmetz. All types and all weights. I prefer microtex (it's a sharp). From the symptoms you describe, I think there might be a rough spot, possibly the throat plate. Mine's been hit, causing a rough spot. Did a little filing. I may have replaced it too. Something to try. |

i don't know how old your machine is. i once had a brother, built in 1955, that had the flat side to the right. the thread went through the needle eye left to right. |
Thought of something else that causes the needle to become unthreaded when using the thread cutter. When that happens, the first thing I check is the little wire around the tension dial. For some reason the thread hops out of the wire.
