Thread catching on edge of spool

There was a comment on a thread within the last couple of months about Presencia thread hanging up on the edge of the spool after it was about half empty, and I've had the same problem. I don't remember the subject of the thread and haven't been able to find it, but I thought whoever made the comment would like to know that I just got an order of Presencia 60-wt. thread and both ends of the spool are as smooth as a baby's bottom! I'm so pleased they fixed the problem -- it's really good thread.

I've had that problem and i change the size of the end cap that slides onto the spool holder to keep the spool in place. the smaller one i use with very skinny spools of thread, the larger cap I use with regular spools of thread. that way the thread glides over the cap and not the spool end itself. i too hate those slits in the spool ends that can catch thread.

caps like these are what i'm talking about

I have some of those caps and I've used them, but the thread still managed to catch on the Presencia spools til they changed the design.

I'm having the same problem with some of my Auriful thread spools! It's not the spool. For what I can see it seems to be how one end of the thread is wound when the spool is 3/4 empty.

use a finger nail file to smooth the edges.

Did that work for you? I tried that, but maybe I didn't file off enough.

Yes, it works. I also filed one of my metal feet that had a burr on it from the needle hitting it.

Just flip the spool over so the slit is at the oposite end.

It wasn't catching on the slit. There isn't a slit on this brand of thread. It was catching on the raised lettering on the edge of the spool. But the good news is that they've stopped marking their spools that way so the thread isn't catching at all anymore.

I tried flipping the Aurifil spool upside down but the thread just caught on the bottom instead of the top. I have to tug the thread to get it to release off the spool. Weird.

some machines require the thread to come off the spool from the back, flipping may not work. the Cap must be larger than the end of the spool to help. I think i heard of someone putting clear nail polish on the slit... not sure. i have an old emery board I sometimes use to file things smooth. but lettering, all i can suggest is the cap being larger.
if all else fails, maybe you can set the thread on a thread holder on the machine table itself. like we do with larger spools. good luck.
