What brand is best? I think I am going to use all white because the sashing will be white, or do I need to get another color to stitch blocks together that matches each block? Do I use bobbin thread or do I need to use same thread I sash with? Do you usually match your thread to each block color, mine are all different colors?? But sashing will be white, also anyone know where to buy the pre-wound bobbins that fit the ellure plus by babylock and a 1/4 foot and binding foot for free motion, and quilt clips?? Id like to but this all from the same store onlone??TIA

I buy cream/neutral and gray thread for all my piecing. I don't match piecing thread to the color fabric, I'd go nuts doing that. All the name brand threads are good quality. The higher the no. the thinner the thread. Try a spool of several brands to find the one you and your machine likes. I get great results from Essential thread from Connecting Threads on line. I use it for piecing and for some machine quilting. I have some of every brand and use them all. My very best favorite for machine quilting is Glide from FelTec and silk mini cones from YLI. Most thread websites have pre filled bobbins, you can't go wrong with buying a neutral color to try out a thread.

What about gutterman- which type would I get - cotton thread or the other types? Is it good?

BellaBoo 11-11-2009 12:40 PM

Guttermann is a very good thread. I like cotton for piecing. For piecing I would stick with size 50 or 60. That's fine for bobbin thread too. It will take experimenting to find the thread you prefer but you'll find it. :D

Is that a good choice for sashing also?

Neutral color is fine for piecing white fabric. It's just a personal preference whatever color you choose to piece with. Sometimes I'll use whatever color I have left on a spool or bobbin.

gutterman is a good choice.. you just need to have on hand, white or neutral colors, to piece with..
i just bought a cone of white essential thread from
www.connectingthreads.com to try out. my friends love it and the price..
i also love superior/masterpice threads and aurifil, and a few others..if your machine loves it, it works. trust me, my machine gets tempermental with certain threads..i am sure it has to do with the thinkness or thiness or it.

i usually quilt with an white or off white thread. occasionally i use a verigated..i love verigated thread!

IMHO, you piece with a cotton or cotton blend, and quilt with whatever you heart desires...just keep in mind, if you use metallics or the like, think about how much it will be washed. for wallhangins..get crazy..for bed quilts, use caution with some thread that is too fancy!

Ditto. I hardly ever use white thread - too stark for me. I use beige or gray and use up what is in the bobbin - not caring too much about matching colors. I try to match the weight though.

I use the threads from Connecting Threads, Star threads, Guetermann, even Coats and Clark. I am not too concerned even about using a blended thread for cotton fabric. (Some people are picky that way)
