What color thread do I use to Machine applique a whit and pink dotted snowwoman onto a teal and whit snowflake background? I never know what color thread I should use and I don't want my quilt to look silly or stupid. Also what weight thread is best to blanket stitch around the designs?

I'd use white. That way, any mistakes would blend in and not be seen.
Welcome to the board. |
Thank you so very much for all of the imput. It really helps because I'm extremely worried I'll make a mistake.

I'm new at applique and I have found for me it's better to match the color so I can hide my uneven stitches. My machine won't do a nice even edge so that helps.

I use silk thread for appliqué. It sinks in the fabric and you can't see the stitches, even my mistakes hide!

is there a specifuc brand you would recomend?

I bought YLI Gift Pack Silk Thread set of 5
$16.00 here: http://www.connectingthreads.com/thr...__L600904.html You can buy single spools here: http://www.roserushbrooke.com/yli-silk-thread-1.html The 100wt thread is so fine it disappears into the fabric. |
For appliqué, you want to match the thread with the piece you are appliquéing onto the background. It helps it blend in better and makes the threads less noticeable.

Forgot to say I use silk thread for hand stitching my binding on quilts. The stitches are almost invisible.
|
Do you use it for machine applique also or just hand applique?
FYI you joined this web page on my birthday this year April 17 it just seemed kinda cool to tell you that. :) |
I match my thread to my applique pieces and then go slower while machine appliquing them down. If you are a little off here and there, you really won't notice unless you are holding it up close and looking for it  :D:D:D I use the same weight thread as I do for piecing.
