I wish I were in Perth. It's pretty nice here too, but I'm not on the lake so it isn't as good as where you are. :D I use cotton for LA, either connecting threads or king tut. May eventually try others but have had such luck with those that I haven't had the incentive to be adventurous. |
I use black, white cream or gray for most of my work.

I use neutral colors for piecing and the only time I need anything else is to applique

I was told to stay away from Black thread. Black thread is usually made from the miscolored batches of thread and has had the opportunity to be redyed several times before they gave up on matching it. Every time it has been dyed it tends to loose its tensile strength and therefore it will break more often. Coats and Clarke are the worlds worse about participating in this practice.
I tested it for kicks and giggles with the set of gauges I use to set tensions up on sewing machines and every time the Black broke before the other colors. And I was using several different spools and brands to see if there was a difference. But the Coats and Clarke would break at half the amount of tension as their White. Billy |
I use cream and gray mostly, keep navy (use w/ black fabric), black and taupe on hand, too. Most of my colors I collect for quilting, not piecing.
I use gray more than anything else. I learned that when your fabrics have lots of contrast, gray is the best choice. Still, I sometimes use white, black, off white, and dark brown depending on the project. Definitely, I use more gray than any other color. It seems to fade into whatever color combo I have going on at the time.
I use a neutral color, such as a light beige or grey.
Light gray for lighter colored quilts, dark gray for darker colored quilts. Sometimes black/white/cream if the blocks are mostly that color.
I generally use a light or medium grey or beige for piecing.
I am using up all my old spools of thread, most of them match one of the fabrics and when those are gone, I'll go neutral.
Med to light gray is what I like to use for piecing as it kinda blends with all colors

I have grays, white, black, and lite to dark beige. I do use the dark beige/taupe for Kansas Troubles Fabrics.
I only have grey and beige for piecing. I suppose I need to add black too but so far I have not done much with black fabric.
I use off white and black.
Use mostly white but aslso use some grey. If the fabric is mostly purple or blue, I will use that color thread as I have lots of different purples and blues thread colors. Rarely use black thread but when I do, I have some King Tut that I use. Also, I tossed all my Coats and Clark after buying better quality thread and realizing I didn't even like the feel of it, let lone working with Coats and Clark. Am amazed at how many LQS' only carry Coats and Clark.

I have a huge order for thread I have to submit to Connecting Threads later today or tomorrow. I am ordering all of their color sets and adding some others to the mix too. So I think I will be set up for a while. ;-)

I'm working on a scrappy quilt with a million different colors and patterns of fabric, I found an ugly color of thread in my stash that I can't imagine using for anything else and am using that and bobbins of all colors to get rid of those only partually full. It's working quite well.

Neutrals (greys and creams).
I use 5000 yd. cones from Connecting Threads. I use white, black, cream and have silver on order. I have 40+ 1200 yd spools of colors - for applique. When quilting, it depends on whether or not I want the quilting to stand out or just be there.
I use medium-light gray or light dull green for piecing. Peach also seems to be a good color. I find buying cones, while expensive, are a better value than spools. This way I can justify using a higher quality thread.
I use medium beige and grey for piecing most of the time, but I do have a range of colours for top stitching or decorative stitching.

Here's their website: http://www.connectingthreads.com |
I usually just use a neutral color unless the fabric is black.
I use mostly white, ecru and black. The other colors I've had a long time, so now I am using them to piece or crafts. Yes we don't need too many colors.

I usually use a neutral for piecing, but have been known to use up odds and ends of other colors

Touche

I use greys and creams unless working on pure white or pure black...then I switch to white and/or black.
I use the large spools of Superior Bottom Line...works great top and bobbin and saves money. I love the taupe shade as IMHO gray is a kind of sad color. I do use cream or white if the fabrics are white.

To Chris who said: Who wants to mend when one can quilt?
Have you heard, "Asking a quilter to mend is like asking Picasso to paint the garage." |
Thanks. I usually use Superior Threads Masterpiece. I know the Connecting Threads price is 1/2, but I'm not sure it's the same quality as I'm using.
