thread differances causing tension problems
WOW, All purpose thread vs machine quilt thread.. I want to cry. had to strip all out.. run and run and run test strips until finding the right top tension... loosing a bunch of time that I don't have...

What weight and ply were the threads?

Some threads just do not play nicely! I hate when that happens and it is either take out all the quilting you have already done and changing to a different thread or soldiering on. I had one variegated quilting thread that gave me fits. Very linty and made a little ball behind the needle hole. I tried everything I could think of and finally just kept an eye on the needle and when I saw the ball/knot developing, stopped and re-threaded. I have never bought another spool of that brand for this reason.

Oh I definitely feel your pain. I have a variegated quilting thread that must be just to thick and it always causes problems. I should just throw it out, but no - I keep trying in on different projects to no avail.

Sometimes if you try a bigger needle or an embroidery needle with a bigger eye, the thread isn't rubbed so much when stitching and behaves better...or the eye in the needle you have could be a little sharp...in case you haven't tried that approach yet :-)
