Thread Magic Product
I was at a Jo-ann's store that was closing last month. I purchased a product call Thread Magic. I had not seen it before in our local Jo-ann's and it was priced at $9.99 (a high price for a little container). I usually use beeswax on my thread when I sitch my binding to the back of my quilts. The beeswax needs to be replaced before I use it up. Thought I would try this product. It shows that you can also use it on your sewing machine.
Would be interested to know if anyone on this board uses this product and your thought? Thanks for any information this well informed members can shed. |
Yours http://www.taylorseville.com/thread-magic.html
Mine http://www.threadheaven.com/ looks like the same type of product to me. I used mine a lot when I was hand quilting. Not quite sure how yours would be applied to a spool? Lasts forever. |
We discussed this product at the senior group. I have used Thread Heaven for decades to prevent knots when hand stitching the binding. There was some mention of a tiny hole in the container to run your thread thru. Other discussed the best way to place it for using on a machine.

I hand quilt and to be perfectly honest, I really didn't like Thread Heaven. IMHO a lot of hype and little performance but lots of people love it.
|
I have several small cubes of Thread Heaven in my hand sewing take along bags. I like using longer thread lengths when I hand sew and this keeps the thread from tangling and getting crazy. I use Sewer's Aid on my spools of thread for the machine.
|
For machine use, you are supposed to just draw a line of the stuff across the threads on your spool. My sewing machine technician advised against using such products as the lubricant can get in the tension discs and gum them up. I have heard of people affixing a small cotton ball above the needle and putting it on that. The thread gets lubricated, but it doesn't go thru the machine innards. As far as I'm concerned, for machine sewing, if a thread doesn't work, I give it away!

I use it for all my hand stitching. It doesn't add the ( gumminess) of bees wax. I've been using it for years.

I agree with the others that Sewer's Aid (they sell that at JAF, too) is the best option for conditioning machine thread. It is a liquid that comes in a small, clear bottle.
I tried Thread Magic 2 years ago for hand work before I tried beeswax. Then I lost the thing & the LQS I was already at buying fabric charged so much for Thread Heaven I just bought a thing of beeswax. My personal preference is for the beeswax, but I'm sure I'm in the minority. Part of that preference is that I have a lot of chemical sensitivities, so I try to stick with natural products as much as possible. |
I've used my little container for Thread Heaven for years for hand work and love it. As Onebyone says, I can use longer lengths of thread without it getting tangled and making me crazy.
|
I use both (thread heaven in the TINY blue box/wax) but prefer bees wax, not really sure why.

I've used Thread Heaven, but prefer the beeswax. I tried Thread Heaven again, just yesterday, and it made my thread a static-electricity mess.
|
Thread Heaven and similar products are very popular with cross stitchers too....I use it when doing applique and all other kinds of hand needlework.
|
I, too have been a user of Thread Heaven for years. Used to use it for beading projects also. I don't think I would use it to run through my machines though, only for hand sewing.
|
I've just started using the Thread Magic and I really like it. I can't really tell any difference in the Tread Magic and Thread Heaven. I've never tried anything on my machine for fear of messing up gears some way.

I use Thread Heaven when hand quilting and much prefer it to beeswax. Have never found a need to use anything on machine thread.

I also use it for thread for my hexies. Otherwise, not in my machines. |
Sewer's Aid is pure silicone. It is the same stuff in the expensive hair serums for frizzy hair. LOL. Also the same lubricant the no oil machines have embedded in the machine gears. I've seen machine techs add a drop to the tension discs to lubricate the discs and feed dogs. A few tiny drops down the length of the spool of thread is lubricating your machine guides to smooth the thread delivery.

I have used it all; Thread Heaven, Magic, and beeswax. If it's there and I think about it I use it. My machines do just fine. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
|
Never anything like that nor have I used beeswax - will have to give it a try on hand stitching as I also like to longer lengths.
|
Thread Heaven is well, heavenly... I do a lot of hand applique, embroidery, piecing, quilting. It has made all of them so much easier. I actually bought a 2nd one in case I ran out of the 1st one...but the 1st one is still going strong.
I also have beeswax, didn't like it nearly as much..it's too hard and doesn't seem to coat the thread as well. Of course if we all liked the same things, how dull would this world be?? Lastly, check around, as $9.99 seems high. Or use a coupon and get it on sale. Regards, Kif |
I also like to use longer lengths of thread when I'm binding and Thread Heaven is wonderful. I'll never be without it!
|
some of the newer machines warn not to use it because it can mess up your machine, I paid too much for my machines to take a chance but when it comes to hand sewing I'll try about anything. Ihaven't heard of this one.
