So with my latest quilting attempt the outside boarder are straight 45 degree angels. It is possible but tiresome to pull the bobbin thread up every time. My Juki has the cutter, so I cut moved back and discovered if I held the top thread, just a little tension, while I stitch and back stitch that I do not have a messy mess of jumbled thread on the back. Haven't tried it yet with my Husqvarna.

That's an old trick for keeping fabric out of the hole in the zigzag needle plate. Thanks for reminding me about a straight stitch machine.

You could also sew off an extra "dummy" piece of cloth.

If I am starting to quilt from the outside of the border, I just hold onto the threads and make my locking stitch and then quilt.

I start with the 0 setting at the beginning and at the end of the stitch line for two stitches and then auto cut. I don't have thread build up and the stitch is locked. I never bring up the bobbin thread. I don't know how that practice even started, I can't any difference doing that. I then snip the tiny ends to nothing after I'm done quilting if I feel like it or if the thread contrasts against the fabric.
