Thread quality?

What is the best type of thread to use? I have a Singer, about 25 years old. Works fairly good for FMQ, except lots of issues with thread and tension. I appreciate the advice of the board :)

For FMQ I like superior king tut, and isacord for poly. For piecing I still love gutterman but might get some masterpiece from superior to try out. I don'y like YLI or aurifil, but do like mettler and connecting threads for piecing as well

This is one of those questions with no right answer. Most machines will sew with most threads, provided the right needle is used, the sewing machine is clean and oiled (if required), the bobbin is properly wound, and the tension is correctly set. Some threads generate more lint than others, and all cotton threads generate some lint, but cleaning the machine will take care of that problem. I prefer a thin thread, such as Bottomline, for piecing, but I have pieced with thicker cotton threads as well. Of course you want to make sure that your thread has not deteriorated with age, and that it isn't nubby. Some serger threads are not very strong, but others are fine. Some people prefer poly, others will only use cotton. So... no right answer.

Presencia 50-weight quilts up nicely. I also like 40-weight King Tut (there are some yummy variegateds in that line) and 30-weight Sulky. I prefer to match the fiber content of my quilting thread with the fiber content of the fabrics used in the quilt, sticking with 100% cotton.

Dunster is SO RIGHT. I have an older Bernina, 1530 and it seems to like Mettler Silk wrapped thread which was recommended to me by the dealer. It does NOT like Gutterman or Dual Duty. I haven't tried any of the new threads that have come out.

I agree with Dunster...My machines are very picky about which threads I use. It is trial and error. I cannot FM with Dual Duty or the 100% cotton cone that I have. Connecting threads are very linty...but sew well.

I use Gutermann cotton, 50wt and it works great with my Juki.
