Thread Question
1 Attachment(s)
This year I'm finishing all my UFO's and I have a Batik 72 block top that was started about three years ago. The blocks were pieced on a Bernina 750QE with Mettler 50 wt. thread. I traded in the 750 for a Bernina 880 and switched to Aurifil thread.
The question is should I join my blocks with Mettler thread (and I still have enough to finish this top), or is it OK to finish with Aurifil? They both claim to be 50 wt., but the Mettler seems a little coarser to me. I've also found Mettler to have more lint than Aurifil. Thanks for your replies. |
It wouldn't matter to me which one I used as long as my seams were consistent. I use Aurifil 50 wt and Connecting threads 50 weight and it doesn't seem to matter.

Since it was started with Mettler thread, the block requires precise quilting for matching, and you have Mettler thread on hand, I would finish it up with Mettler to keep everything consistent and use up the thread. I know what you mean about the lint, though. You could certainly switch to Aurifil as long as you take care to check that everything is lining up as you should. If, for some reason, it isn't (could be the change in sewing machines as well as thread) you can just make a slight adjustment on your seam size when sewing the blocks together.

Love your quilt with all the vibrant colors!

Lovely blocks and if you have enough of Mettler, you might as well use it up.

It is true that you might as well use up the Mettler-just to use it up. However, it really doesn't matter which thread you use as long as your blocks are consistent. You might need to alter your seam width just a bit. Try a couple and check it out. I have a wide variety of thread brands and use them interchangeably without problem. I do prefer cone thread because of the cost. I piece with white, beige or gray for the most part. Once in a while I use a color just to use it up or empty my bobbins. The goal is consistent size of blocks for easy joining.

Use the old thread up if you have found a new love. I don’t think it will make a long term difference in the final finish!
