I have always taken my quilts to have them quilted so, I am VERY new to Free Motion Quilting, and I am wondering which brand of thread would be the best to FMQ my quilt? I don't know if we are allowed to endorse one brand over the other but, I just need ideas. I have been using Mettler quilting thread to pratice with. Now it is time to finish my quilt, as I think I am ready to FMQ my first quilt on my own! Suggestions?

Use what your machine likes.

Don't limit yourself to one brand of thread. I've tried all kinds and like many different ones. King Tut from Superior threads is great, as is their Lava thread. I've also used Auriful, Signature, Sulky, Mettler, Gutermann and liked them all. Threads come in different weights as well, sometimes you want the thread to really stand out and other times you want it not to show as much. I tend to use what's most readily available to me.

Use the thinnest thread your machine will be happy with. 50 or 60-weight. One book I read suggested starting out with 100-weight YLI silk thread - the thinner the thread, the less any "inconsistencies" will stand out.

A friend who has a LA machine uses either only Superior threads. She likes the King Tut line. If you got to quilt shows, sometimes they are a vendor and you can get the thread there for much less expensive than on their website.

Just be careful not to use threat that is for hand quilting on a machine. It will gunk things up a lot. (I caught myself almost using a spool of Gutermann labeled for quilting but on further investigation found it was really for hand quilting.)

I use Essential thread from Connecting Threads. It works great in my machine.

I love Presencia. However, if Mettler is what you have been using, why change a good thing? Go for it!
