ok so we talk about fabric stash, what about thread stach? I'm trying to build mine up, whats the best way?

Do you buy thread on discount?

Do you buy in bulk?

Do you buy a certin brand?

Or anything goes?

I just picked up 5 spools of neutral Star thread. (I read somewhere that Star thread is produced by Coats and Clark). It handles real well in my machine. Recently, I also ordered a few color sets of the Connecting Threads thread.

Once, I ordered a set of small spools thinking I would use it for applique. It really sounded too good to be true.....and it was. The thread is real crap but I couldn't return it. So I use it in small pieces to keep it from knotting up. ....and one of these days, I will toss the whole bin in the trash.

I have 3 different kinds of thread. Machine quilting, hand quilting, & all purpose/cotton. Multiple colors of each. I like doing hand applique so I've gotten quite a bit of colors. I usually wait until they're on sale and then grab a bunch.

I have started building up on decorative threads. I especially like the rayons.

I am quilting the sky in a landscape quilt in feathers with a very pale dove grey rayon. I am hoping that it looks like billowy clouds when I get done.

My Babylock loves Coats & Clark so I have a whole array of colors. My Husqvarna (had it about a year) prefers the ritzy, all cotton, Mettler thread so I'm building that stash. I'm always scouting shops for their discount/discontinued bin for expensive threads of which there are only one spool; if its a large spool, it's worth buying.

I worked at a fabric shop years ago and I bought every color of Gutermann we carried. I store what I can fit of it a Sulky clear plastic carrier. I have a Janome and it likes the Gutermann.

I have lots of free sample spools of all kinds that I haven't even opened or tried yet. One day................

I started building my thread stash by trial and error. Some threads were very expensive and my machine didn't like some of it. Connecting Treads sets are great to build up a thread stash. I would suggest buying one spool of any brand thread and trying it out then look for the thread sets and sales.

Mine really grew when I found Connecting Threads. I love their threads. Great colors. And the price is right.

We have a sewing show in Toronto each year when I stock up on my thread - embroidery & quilting. I was told years ago not to keep thread too long as it breaks down, I am not sure if this is true or not but I stick with it.l

I used to sew clothes and home dec things before the quilting bug bit me. I have a box of Coats and Clark threads in every color of the rainbow. When I started quilting, I realized just how quickly the C and C spools became empty. And at almost $3 a spool, it was breaking my budget.

I found Connecting Threads and stocked up before Christmas when all of their threads were on sale. I have at least one of every color, and two of some. I love how the Connecting Threads spools seem to last and last. I have a Janome and Brother and both machines like both kinds of threads.

Before home embroidery machines were available for everyone, my neighbor did monogramming for local sporting good stores, uniforms, and team shirts. All the embroidery thread in all the colors came from France and was very expensive. She kept it in her freezer so it wouldn't dry out. Her machines were massive compared to the ones now. That lady made a fortune and her timing was perfect. She retired just as the small domestic embroidery machines were starting to sell.

I attended the "threadology" class at Superior Thread and we all received a spool of all the threads they carry. Superior also has "try me" specials on their web site. It's a good way to try the King Tut.

a good sale is a good sale, but i have had really bad luck with rotten thread from -discount- sources. also, thread has a much shorter 'shelf-life' than fabric...i have paid big bucks for good brand thread that a shop keeper had purchased a 'bulk-load' of and had it not usable for anything beyond basting because it breaks every couple inches...when i went back to the shop with the thread her and i together contacted the thread company who let us know after a couple years of 'sitting around' it weakens...sorry...'so i buy my thread from sources i know have a good turn around, are always ordering new...and i do have a stash but try to buy thread i know i'm going to use...within the next few months...in other words i buy it when i need it, the stash is the thread left on the spool after i'm done with my project...

I just bought a bunch of thread from Connecting Threads. So many colors, right price, and seems like really good thread. My machine has had no trouble when I use it.

Jim has bought me the Walmart white for piecing and another for hand quilting. I recently started collecting Coats for colors in hand quilting.

I've never used Connecting Threads thread, but wish it also came in different weights.

I started collecting a few once I a purchased my HQ. There are the King Tut and So Fine. I have a small collection for embroidery threads. I have almost all the DMC embroidery floss colors.
So Fine is in a draw the same as KT.
I have two containers of small spools and YLI

Yes, I have a thread stash too. I need it to go with the fabric stash. I have a large supply of rayon thread for my embrodery machine. When I am sewing, I want everything there and ready to use.

I love to collect thread.... mostly in the basic colors. My favorite thread is Aurifil - it is very thin but strong and so a full bobbin lasts for a long time. It is expensive - usually around 9.00 a spool but it is worth it. I once had to have some blue thread for some applique on a towel... it was Sunday and had to go to Wal-Mart. All it did was broke.... I had to wait till Monday and go to my LQS to get good thread to finish the project! So now I only buy at my LQS.

My LQS only carries Metler and Gutermann so I always buy the basic colors of Aurifil when I find it!

I have tried a black King Tut and love that for machine blanket stitch applique.

I buy my thread from Red Rock Threads. I get the Robison-Anton. This same thread is found in quilting stores but is much cheaper to buy online. I usually buy four or five at a time.

Google Aurfil, you can get it cheaper, I do. My last order over a year ago, cost me $50.00 free shipping, and I think I got 7, 8 or 9 spools.
