Thread Survey
Curiosity has gotten the best of me.
How many of us use ( and why): 1. Same thread in the bobbin ad the top 2. Different thread, same color 3. Different thread, different color. Thanks Mike |
Depends on the project. For machine embroidery I always use bobbin thread unless doing lace then I use the same thread top and bottom. When just sewing, I admit I will try to use similar colors in top and bottom as I attempt to use up partially filled bobbins but for the most part I do like to use the same thread in the in both when working on a quilt or garment or another project.
All of the above. Sometimes I use same top & bottom. ( sometimes it helps make things sew better)
sometimes I may use two different threads same color....maybe I have connecting threads cotton wound on a bobbin then find I have the same color in aurifil. ( just an example) sometimes the back or bottom ( bobbin) threads is going to show, I need a different color than on the top. Sometimes I'm just using up bobbins and the colors don't matter, sometimes I'm using up spools and again ( when piecing) the color doesn't matter. It just depends. |
since i use prewounds, the bobbin color is most always the translucent white of my stash. mostly, the 'white' disappears into the backing color. occasionally, i change the bobbin to match the top for a specific look.
For piecing I use the same. For machine quilting, at times I have changed the bobbin thread color.
all of the above for piecing. For quilting, I usually use the same color top and bottom.
I'm done all, but mainly 1. I do it for convenience more than anything. I wind about 10 bobbins at a time.
Same for me
For piecing I mostly just care about how thin the thread is, and not too dark if I'm piecing lights. So I'll use whatever on top & bottom as long as it's about same thickness (or thinness, as the case may be).
For quilting, it really depends on the quilt - what colors are already involved and what my goals are. Often I try to match the bottom thread to the backing color but sometimes I might go for contrast or use a variegated thread; on the top I might either try to match the top color for something like SITD quilting, or I might go with a bold contrast if I'm doing FMQ that I want to have show up. I also tend to use a lot of variegated thread on top in my quilting if I'm doing baby quilts. If I'm going to be doing very dense quilting like for a modern quilt, I usually use my thinnest threads in top & bottom....unless maybe it's an art quilt in which case I might pick a heavier thread. So I guess my answer is, "it varies, greatly". :) |
I tried using different threads but the machine got a headache. I do sometime use same thread and different colors.
Mostly #1, but occasionally #3.
I use pre wound bobbins. I use light colors on top if piecing light colored fabric, and dark thread if dark colored fabric. I let my quilter choose the colors when she quilts my tops.
I just use the same thread on the top as in the bobbin, usually a white or off white for everything, even quilting. I don't really know why, so I'll say probably "just because!"
I coordinate my thread colors with the fabrics I'm using. My usual weight thread is either 40 or 50 weight. Sometimes I get really creative and work with the variegated threads on my quilt top while quilting. The bottom thread usually matches the bottom fabric.
I'll use a different color bobbin thread when piecing if I have a partial bobbin to use up.
When quilting, I always use the same thread top and bottom because pokies show if I use a different color. |
It depends on the project for sure:)
I use the same type/weight of thread for the bobbin as on top. The reason for that is just that it has worked for me and then I don't have to buy as many different types of thread.
Whether I use the same color depends on the situation. For things where the thread won't show, I often use up old bobbins and they usually don't match. For quilting, I'm usually trying to blend into the fabric, which frequently means using different colors on top and bottom. |
I do all three ways depending what is wound on my bobbin. Never have any problems using different threads.
I use different threads for piecing. But I use a thin thread in the bobbin no matter what type I use on the top.
Usually #1.
I use the same thread in bobbin and on the top.. I also use 50wt thread, found out a couple of years ago it is better to piece with...Who knew
For piecing, I use prewound bobbins so the top and bottom threads are generally different. For quilting, if I am using regular thread, the top and bobbin match, but if I use heavy thread or metallic I color match but use a thin cotton. For garment sewing, I match.
I'm a "collector"...I always buy thread at garage sales and anywhere else I can find it cheap. I use it to piece, and don't care if bobbin and top are different colors, it never shows. I save my good thread for quilting, where it will show. The colors that I choose for top and bobbin depend on the quilt and quilting I plan to do...if I want the quilting on the back to pop and create a reversible quilt, or if I want it to blend and be hidden.
I often use the same thread for piecing and quilting and only adjust the color. For piecing, I try to stay with neutrals but sometimes I will use up leftover colors in the bobbin.
Sometimes I use a thicker thread in the top and a thinner one in the bobbin. The color depends on the project. I also like monofilament in the top with a 50 weight cotton in the bobbin. Honestly, there are some spools I don't know what they are. I still use them. |
