What do most of you all use for your piecing and/or machine quilting?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8SF-6kZTX8 some good links I use machine quilting thread from Joannes (less expensive stuff for piecing) I plan to switch to polyester for machine quilting as I heard good things about it I use hand quilting thread for hand stitching the binding I plan to buy silk for needle turn applique (haven't tried hand applique yet) One of the big pointers I picked up is that different machines work better with different threads (for no apparent reason). One thread type/brand may work beautifully in one machine and may not work in another. |
i love the threads from connecting threads- now days i pretty much buy all my thread from them-
their new machine quilting thread is wonderful. for hand work/applique and piecing i use silk thread...i just love using it- it is fine-strong and smooth great to work with. |
I've only used Coats & Clark on my featherweight...works great, and I have a ton of it that I'm trying to use up. My Viking works well with many brands, except for Connecting Threads brand. I generally use Aurifil, Wonderfil, Gutterman or Coats & Clark. The Aurifil/Wonderfil spools last a long time and I think it's better price for the quantity than some of the other brands.

Aurifil 50 wt for piecing, 12, 28, or 40 wt for quilting. Or Masterpiece by Superior for piecing, Perfect Quilter or King Tut for quilting. I love Superior's titanium needles. They have TONS of info on their website.

I like Marathon threads , for piecing and for longarm quilting

I like Connecting Thread's Essential Pro on the cone for most of my machine quilting. I have some of every brand of thread there is bought on sale over the years. I got a lot of Aurifil thread on clearance and it's very good. Glide from Fil Tec is excellent for colorful machine quilting. I like WonderFil thread and of course my all time favorite thread is YLI silk thread. Superior thread is almost perfect. Guttermann is great. Mettler is strong. Star seems a little linty but good. C&C works when others keep breaking. Sulky is glamorous. Robinson Anton has a great selection of colors. Each brand has a pros and cons. You'll find your favorites as you start using all the different brands.

I am not much of a machine quilter, but for piecing I prefer to use 100% cotton, 50 wt, 3 ply thread. I like Auriful and Guttermann, but have also used other brands.

"Polyester will melt from a hot iron"
I didn't find that it did when I made many string blocks using up old half empty spools of poly thread. I did press the strips with a hot iron as I added them onto the backing, and also pressed the backing where the thread showed and never had anything melt. I've also noted that many long arm quilters use poly thread. I usually use Connecting Threads thread in neutral colors for piecing, love the light gray as it goes with everything. |
Aurofil all the way. For piecing it is great; being only 2 ply I finally get the size of quilt square that I need; before it was always too small. Very little lint. For quilting it also works great; Viking recommends it for my Viking mega quilter. It comes in alot of different colors including varigated.

The Superior Threads website has a fantastic section on thread usage.

Right now I also use pretty much all Connecting Threads thread. You just can't beat the price and selection. It does lint up A LOT when machine quilting though. I use a light/medium gray for pretty much all of my piecing.

I don't really care if it is cotton, poly, nylon, or rayon. If I like it and it works on my machine I'll use it. I have a lot of Aurifil and Connecting Threads Essentials I'm using now. Both brands have cotton and poly threads, doesn't matter to me when I'm piecing. I use the prettier color thread for machine quilting or decorative stitches. Any good thread will last in a quilt much longer then I'll be alive so why stress over it?

I use the cone thread from Maxilock.

Masterpiece by Superior threads!
