Thread
There has been many questions on here about thread. I guess we all have certain things we do in quilting and when asked why, our answer is because that's how we were taught.
I piece all my quilts with white thread. I have taught people to quilt and always with white. I assumed everyone does because white is the first color to sell out in sales on thread. So I was curious, what color do you use? white? or do you use a coordinating color to piece? |
I use off white taupe or greys
Usually I use greys, but once in awhile I coordinate if the colors are close.
grey or taupe/beigy
Thanks so much! I appreciate the feedback

I only use white when sewing on white fabric. I use alot of cream, or gray. It used to be spool of white thread were very inexpensive and many times there would be bins of big spools 6 for $1.00 with mostly white maybe a few black spools, so Mom would tell me to use white because it was cheaper.

i seldom use white- it shows up too much- for piecing i generally use a neutral- light or medium gray or natural/cream
for quilting i use colors- to go with the quilt- or vareagated threads i think in years of quilting i've used thread once or twice- (on white quilts of course) but i don't make alot of white quilts i love color- so i use color. :) |
Ditto. Me as well! Unless of course its black and deep navy.
I also use some shades of green, very neutral and blends well. I only use white or black as needed.
I only piece with white thread if the quilt is predominantly white.. I never quilt with white. There are soooo many other interesting choices to try!!
It's actually better to go with the darker color when you are given a choice of two. I'll choose the darkest grey or taupe I can find that matches the darkest color in the pieces (unless the darkest color is a tiny print, then I match the predominant color). The reason is that that the darker colors will not show as much, they'll get hidden in the "shadow" of the seam edge. I know it sounds illogical, but try it.
The only time I would piece with white is if I were piecing two white fabrics, and that just hasn't happened yet! That said, yes I have quite a bit of white in my thread collection. Why? Because I too was taught to work with white :) |
I love auriful's silver grey for lighter colors and I use black when piecing dark quilts.
I piece with whatever I have on hand....the stitching does not show and it lets me use up thread I normally wouldn't use for fmq....it may be cotton or poly....the only exception may be if I am sewing a very dark color and then will try to match.

white and beige whatevers handy
I use mostly white or taupe.
I rarely use white thread for piecing. I use a muddy tan greenish color that blends with most prints. I use natural/tan color for light solids.
I use the color that matches the best, white for white, etc. If it is a mixed up colored quilt I use a neutral. If it is mostly black or blue or whatever I match to it.
i have so many spools of thread left over from other projects that I use whatever is in my drawer. I have also learned about how well grey disappears and when thread is on sale, I will be picking up more grey.
I use beige and if the fabrics are really dark I use gray. I tend to be more colorful with the thread I quilt with.
I hand piece AND hand quilt. I only use YLI in either white or ecru.
I use tan or grey for all my piecing.
Beige or Light Grey for lighter fabrics. Dark grey for darker fabrics. If it's light and dark, I usually use a medium grey. I piece entirely with Aurafil. Love it.
mostly white, too. though if I'm sewing black or dark fabrics, I turn to black.
I piece with off white or grey. I rarely use white except on white fabrics and rarely use black, only on black fabrics or very dark fabrics. The thread doesn't show and using off white allows me to load many bobbins and that saves time.

Taupe, gray, and black or navy.
Mostly grey, but occasionally natural/beige for piecing.
I use whatever color I am going to quilt it with.
I almost always try to use a coordinating color. If I don't have one consistent coordinating color, then I use a neutral, but only white when the fabric is predominantly white.
I use white for white fabric. Unless I am using thread color for drama or accent I use mainly taupe/cream/beige and grey. I've found I really like a varigated grey thread.
