I would like to know what thread everyone uses to machine piece with. I have read that the thickness of your thread can cause your 1/4 seams to
be off.

I like using Coats or Gutterman's all-cotton thread, if it's an all-cotton top that I'm piecing. I do this so the strength of the thread matches the strength of the fabric. Not sure that it's necessary, but that's what I've liked over the last few years.

The thread thickness can throw off your 1/4" seam ... you can adjust by doing a scant 1/4" if your thread is really thick.

But, the more important thing is that you are consistent throughout the blocks and all the piecing. That's what will get your seams to match.

It's another good reason to do a couple of sample blocks ... you can adjust your seams if the block size you're ending up with isn't quite right. And yet another 'but' - still won't matter if you're consistent with the seams for that top!

I like Superior Thread. I sue MasterPiece for the top and Bottom Line for the bobbin.

I use thread from Connecting Threads. It has always worked great for me.

I also use superior thread and a very small (Micro) needle size. Both help keep my 1/4 inch seam accurate.

I love the thread from Connecting Threads. It is really good thread and there is so much on a spool. I have put together 4 lap quilts from one spool. There is little to no lint. LOVE IT.

I use Connecting Threads Essentials, great price and a lot of thread on a spool.

I also use the thread from Connecting Threads.
It DOES have lots of thread on a spool.
And I love how it sews! :D

Is it OK to use polyester thread for piecing my blocks together. I heard that polyester thread is not good for the quilting process but is it bad for the block piecing process?

That is true but also it is the thickness of the fabric too.
If you are not getting a perfect 1/4 in seam then do a scant 1/4 in seam if you have needle positions on your machine.
every fabric even with the same thread will be slightly different....
I just use a good cotton thread NO polyester thread.

I use Mettler silk-finish to piece.

My very favorite is Aurifil, I think it is 50/2ply and it is strong but fine enough not to make my seams bulky!! Usually use the tan off-whites, it goes with almost everything! But I keep greenish and black on hand just in case.

One of my nearby fabric shops carries it but sometimes have to wait for the new shipment to get my colors.

I like InvisiFil thread. It's super thin and very strong. I use it in my bobbin. I like Connecting Threads color sets. I bought the large cone size of neutral color of Connecting Threads and I piece with that for the top thread. I had a sampler of Aurifil and it's nice but now that Aurifil has big names in quilting endorsing it, it has gone up in price. Got to pay those spokespeople somehow.

I always use YLI Soft Touch 60/2 for piecing - it's strong, fine and hardly leaves any lint.

I LOVE Masterpiece thread but it is pricey. I use Connecting threads for all my charity quilts where the exact 1/4 is not as important.

What I do when I use the thicker threads---is cut just a TINY bit wider. I hate the scant 1/4 inch and have trouble making it with my Featherweight. You cannot move the needle over with this older but goodie.

Hi, I am wanting to try this invisible thread on a quilt I am making. Does Joann's sell it? Can you use the invisifil thread for the top thread, and another color for bobbin thread? I tried using some clear thread I had, and it is so thin, keeps breaking all the time. It is some I've had for awhile. Do you have to set the tension different when using this type of thread? Sure would appreciated any impute on this. Thanks so much.

I have talked to people and many have had problems with coats...and told me to buy http://www.sulky.com/ or a few other high end threads - that is really makes a difference...not the quit but keeping you machine running good.

I tried the invisible thread...nightmare...I just bought the clear thread hoping it will be better...it looks great but its a pain to sew.

I have used invisible thread for quilts and placemats. I haven't had any trouble with it. Joanns has it as well as Michaels used to.

I tried the coats invisible thread. It was lik fishing line. It use to break all the time. I just bought sulky clear thread. hoping it works better

I have used every brand of thread and have about every brand. I love trying new ones. InvisFil is becoming a favorite for my bobbin. Connecting Threads cotton and the new poly is very good for piecing. I have good luck using it for machine quilting too. Can't beat the price for it, it is my basic thread of choice. Aurifil is very smooth and I bought a lot of it when it was on clearance from http://www.tristan.bc.ca/specials.html, it still is the best price for Aurifil and Mako cotton thread. I use Superior threads when I find them on sale. Superior has a new silk thread the is great for machine quilting. Sulky and Gutermann and Mettler are very good. Robison-Anton thread is nice and usually better priced then most. YLI has very good hand quilting thread and excellent silk thread. I love using silk thread for FMQ and applique. Glide from Fil Tec is my next best FMQ thread. Star is nice thread but it takes a spool adapter which is not worth bothering with when there are other threads that don't need one. Presencia thread is good but not easy to find on sale. The Coats and Clark metallic thread is the best I've used for not breaking. It sounds like I have a lot of thread and I do. All the pricey brands I bought on sale or clearance to try. Silk is my all time personal favorite thread to use.

I love Aurafil, Mettler and Precensia for piecing. I also use all three for quilting.

Yes, Joanne has invisible thread, they also have clear thread from sulky that i just bought. I use invisible on the top and a different color on the bottom. and yes it does break alot. but worth it for stitch in the ditch.

your thread choices are as individual as your fabric choices. i peice with cotton, poly, wool and silk thread...just depends on the project. my favorites to piece with are poly (stronger, doesn't tangle as bad as cotton) and silk (my favorite for hand piecing) but i seldom worry about it...as long as the thread is strong enough to hold up and the right color i use it. as for weight i usually use 50 weight, except the silks are 100 wt. (very thin) great for applique.
