What is the best thread to use as a new a new quilter on longarm. Cotton pieced top , warm and natural batting and cotton backing. I bought 40 wt but now reading about thread I'm confused. Also what brand seems to preform the best

If the dealer didn't specify a thread, I would search for previous post. I have an old DSM Bernina and the thread that my dealer told me to use was Mettler and it has always worked best on it. Find out what works best on your LA.

What brand of LA? I have an Innova and have had no issues with any of the Superior Thread products: King Tut (40 wt cotton), Kimono (100 wt silk), Omni (40 wt polyester), and Lava as well as Isacord (40 wt), and Glide (40 wt) from Fil-Tec. The way the thread performs also depends on making sure you have the correct needle for the thread weight.

I recommend checking out Superior Threads' website. They have articles on thread (https://www.superiorthreads.com/education/) and reference guides (https://www.superiorthreads.com/reference-guides/). The information applies to any brand of thread. This will give you a starting point on thread information. I would also suggest finding a Yahoo group for your brand of LA and see what suggestions other owners have.

When I got my used Voyager 17 setup I tried several different types of thread. The one that gives me absolutely NO problems at all is Glide thread, which I purchased here: http://www.bobbincentral.com/quiltin...ead/glide.html . I love their magna-glide bobbins too. It seems to work really well with almost all longarm and domestic setups, although occasionally there is someone who posts it doesn't work well in their machines. If you call or email the company, they will let you order just a single cone to try out to see if it works for you (so you don't have to meet their minimum order requirement).

Here are the threads I have tried out: King Tut cotton, linty, occasional fraying or breakage, on the heavier side for a quilting thread), Signature (very similar to King Tut for me), Connecting Threads Essential Pro (70 wt polyester which makes it quite fine; lots of frame quilters use it successfully and it is very economical, but it broke too easily on my setup), and Glide (40wt trilobal polyester, very little lint, never frays or breaks on me).
