My Brother embroidery machine arrived last night! Plan on getting to know her today. My question is what type of embroidery thread to use, rayon or polyester? I know you can't used regular thread.

I used rayon, but that was because I liked the sheen of it. I used Isacord.

I like Sulky.

Rayon is fine for items that don't receive a lot of abuse. Poly is better for items that will be USED frequently and will stand up through bleaching-think kids items. Poly is much sturdier and is now the "in" embroidery thread of choice, whereas it use to be rayon.

Thanks for the info. I like the sheen of the rayon also.

I use the cheap $1.99 cones from Joanns they work fine in my brother machine~ I use what I have on hand unless you want a special sheen but I can see no difference.

You can use either. Rayon has a beautiful sheen, but now the Polyester threads do as well.

If the item will be laundered frequently, I would suggest useing Polyester. Rayon can fade with repeated washings.

Have fun :-D

I used Rayon exclussively becaus eof the shine but when I started doing quilt blocks, I switched to cotton. I just felt that it worked best for quilts.
