I have recently learned about using the 60wt bobbin thread.
All cotton.
I had just been using prewound bobbins which are 40wt, until mentioned using the 60wt for paper piecing.

I am now hooked on 50-60wt in the bobbin for ALL of my piecing as it really makes the seams lie flat.
It also FILLS a good bobbin since it is thinner, it puts more on the bobbin which means fewer bobbin changes, and time saved! YEAH!

Wondering what othesr use in the bobbin and if you love 60wt as well.

I have found that it is not easy to find, and the color selection is lame...but I really do love it!

The woman who did long arm work for me once said she typically uses 60wt in the bobbin for quilting. I tried it and liked the results. I hadn't thought about using it in piecing. Will follow this thread (pun intended).

I really love it for paper piecing, you tend to have so many seams coming together, and this really makes a nice tiny, flat stitch so the seams really lie well. AND it makes the paper just snap off!

So I used to make a regular block and wow...it is so wonderful.

I also use it for machine applique...again, it adds less bulk underneath so the stitching on top really looks smooth!

What brand 60 wt. do you use. Does the spool tell you what wt. it is. I mean is it written on the spool?

My 60wt is Mettler, and yes it has the weight on it. I also inked in in heavy black "60" on the top so I don't pick it up by accident since it's white thread and we use that all day long!

When the crummy poly-wrapped cotton was messing up my machine, I swtched to a good 50wt. Cotton for piecing and quilting, and I love it. I'll have to see what the LQS has for 60, but I love the colour range I've found in the 50.

Someone posted a Bottom line thread site in another thread earlier today. I know they had 60 wt at a good price in lots of colors. The site seems to say to use it in the top and bobbin both for piecing.

I've been getting the best results since I switched to Aurifil 50 wt for piecing. Got it on clearance from www.tristan.bc.ca I got the tip from Candace of elkgroveorchids.net. She's on this board. I put her name and email in the comments for referring me. I never would have tried it if not for the sale. Now I'm set for life (almost)! No tangles, fraying, breaking, and markedly less lint. Helps get that perfect 1/4" seam. I also like Masterpiece, which is 50 wt, by Superior Threads. They make a 60 wt poly, but they recommend cotton for piecing since it will be pressed with a hot iron. Just passing along what I've been fortunate to learn.

I use Mettler 60wt Silk Finish or YLI 60wt Soft Touch for piecing. Also use either of these, or more often Bottom Line in the bobbin.

I only use Presencia 60wt thread for piecing, both in the bobbin and on top. It's a 3 ply thread, and is actually a bit stronger than a 2ply 50wt, which is what most quilters use.

I have not used white thread in years...don't think I own any...

I use the YLI and Aurufil and for prewound bobbins I find the Masterpiece threads great for machine applique when you only need a little here and a little there..

If have not guessed yet, I do not like anything but cotton thread or the silk wrapped from Mettler.

i generally use 100 wt thread in my bobbins, i get twice as much on the bobbin and it works great :thumbup: i also use 100 wt for applique and hand piecing

ok, the only 100wt thread I was familiar with is silk, not the best thread choice for anything that is laundered a lot, so I went to see what my distributor offered in 100wt.
Seems there is only 1 brand of cotton, it is Heirloom brand and it only comes in white and off white.
