I am new to quilting so please forgive this question. I am going to hand quilt my top. Am I suppose to use a single piece of thread or double it and knot it at the end? I know I will receive lots of needed advice from all of you and I look forward to learning this wonderful form of art. Thank you so much for all your help.

Welcome to the Board. Single thread with quilters knot in one end would be the most common way to hand quilt. Try using the Search feature and you'll find some great posts about hand quilting, thread for hand quilting, how to make quilters knot, etc. You're definitely in the right place to learn...you're going to love it!

I use single and my mother uses double. I think its each person preference.

A single thread is traditional. The logic was that two threads rubbing together over time would wear each other out and break.

You make a small knot in one end of the thread and "pop" it through to be buried in the batting with your first stitch. It can help to rub a fingernail over the knot and fabric to help it pop through the fabric.

Cut only about 18" of thread at a time so it will be less likely to tangle. Some quilters run their thread over a piece of wax first as this help strengthen the thread and prevent it from tangling. You can also purchase hand quilting thread that has a wax-like stiffener in it to prevent tangling. However, a lot of quilters (perhaps most) just use plain thread to quilt.
