Three fabric quilt

I have 3 fabrics (3yards each) ot use to make my grandaughters quilt. One print with kittens and the other 2 blenders. I am looking for suggestions for a pattern to make..One preferably that is simple as I have to make a second one with puppies for her twin sister

I would do disappearing 9 patch. Easy Quick and wil show up the focus fabric.

QuiltingWithMissy 05-01-2013 04:30 PM

I was think the disappearing also. Or maybe the orange peal.:)

TerryQuilter 05-01-2013 05:13 PM

Warm Wishes would be a good one to highlight a focus fabric.

My favorite 3 color quilt is the cover quilt on Lynette Jensen's September Morning book. It's the cover quilt, but is named something else.

Rail fence is the 1st thing that came to my mind. There's so many ways to arrange the squares.

Yes, that would be perfect. (purrrfect) A good sized square of the kitten fabric in the middle. I would be great.

Doesn't warm wishes need 4 different fabrics?...Although I guess I could try to find another one that matches....

I was thinking the same thing. Plus it is really easy.

Warm wishes gets my vote, it's traditional and would be more appropriate for her age.

alleyoop1 05-02-2013 05:55 AM

Rail fence is nice and can be done with 3 fabrics.

berryberry 05-02-2013 06:11 AM

I purchased (2) 3 of 1 yard quilt kits at the Mid-Atlantic show. When you buy a kit ($23) you also got to pick one of their patterns. The name of the company is fabric café. There's like 25 different 3 of 1 yard quilt patterns. Here's the link so you can view the different patterns and pick the one you like.

I would suggest the Ohio Star----When my granddaughter was six she wanted a quilt with ballerina's and Scooby Doo--what a combination---I made Ohio Stars with Scooby and ballerinas in center blocks--looked great and she was happy--Leah will be 18 this month and still has this quilt---she keeps it on display in her room---I have made her many other quilts that she loves but she won't put away this one

Daisy Dew 05-03-2013 02:59 AM

Rail Fence would get my vote!

This is a great link for a variety of simple patterns with three fabrics. Thanks for sharing!

I agree. A disappearing 9 patch will look great. Put the kitten fabric in the four outer corners and the darkest of the blenders in the center. I made a large crib quilt like this in only a weekend and it looked great--except I use a small green plaid instead of kittens since it was for a boy. :D

MargeD 05-03-2013 10:27 AM

I agree with Terry Quilter that Warm Wishes would be a good choice, or even a 9-patch alternating with a snowball block or even just a square of the kitten fabric. Either one is fairly quick and easy to make.

Yep, warm wishes jumped into my mind!!

I have made Warm Wishes with 3 fabrics. It looked pretty good. I just made the outer two fabrics on the rail fence part the same fabric. Wish I had a picture...wait, maybe I do. Yup, found it. See if this might work for you... oops, forgot about the inner red border I put on it. Guess that makes it four fabrics...

Thanks, Laura, my quilt inspector (Hot Rod) thinks it is part of his job to appear whenever I am taking a picture of a quilt. :)

attic windows, they'd love to see kittens and puppies thru windows

KyKaren1949 05-03-2013 05:53 PM

A Turning Twenty or Yellow Brick Road would have pieces large enough to see the fabric theme easily; and they are very easy and quickly made.

I was thinking of attic window as well. Google attic windows and tons of images and free patterns come up. It so fun and playful.

This looks great!

I would find a fourth fabric to use as a background fabric and use the "Warm Wishes Pattern" Fussy cut the cat print and use the other two fabrics as framing, It is an easy pattern and goes together quick. Just Google the pattern name and you can find a couple dozen patterns. I loved using this pattern.

Have fun, and enjoy this day, for it is good, we are not promised tomarrow.

gibbette 05-06-2013 07:54 AM

I just finished a Snowball quilt pattern from Fabric Cafe - using 3 - 1 yd pieces of fabric. My GD loved it. It was Hello Kitty fabrick, light pink and black w/white pindots.

That looks really nice.

marymm 05-06-2013 10:36 AM

I like Warm Wishes, too, but even simpler would be to alternate blocks of the animal fabric (anywhere from 4" to 12" squares, depending on the fabric and how many blocks you're in a mood to make) with a simple pinwheel or four patch, (the same size as the focus fabric) then use a border of the animal print.

missgigglewings 05-07-2013 10:17 AM

OK...Well at least you all convinced me! Where's the best place to purchase (or get free :)) the pattern for Warm Wishes? Thanks!
