I went yesterday to a local Goodwill and bought the three patterns shown here for $2.50 each.
Next I went to the local Ben Franklin and bought enough easter fabric to make one of those 60 degree cut table runners. The fabric here in this out of the place store was beautiful...and only about $4 a yard. There's nothing like the feel of a cut of fabric just off of the bolt.
I've inherited a bunch of fabric scraps from my aunt and have sorted them by color. The realization is that I don't like to use these scraps in my projects. I really enjoy the "hunt" for fabric for my new projects and I love that I can connect the scraps "I" create to a project that I've finished. I've started to take all of these unwanted orphan scraps and cut them into 2.5 inch strips to make some sort of stripped quilt just to get the fabric used and out of my stash. Is that a terrible thing to do? Am I a scrap snob?

I would say NO!! you are not a scrap snob! You need to create with the fabric that pleases you. Amen! ;-)

By the way, great find!!

luvTooQuilt 03-24-2011 10:18 AM

Nope. IMHO a snob is if your threw them away ( or snub your nose at them) ... However, You are using what was given and that was its intent now wasnt it??

I on the other hand am a scrap hoarder..I love scraps.. But I will try and use every lil piece and those that i can I will pass on to another...

Those are great patterns. No you are not a scrap snob. Not everyone likes scraps.

sgardner 03-24-2011 10:26 AM

Not every scrap is worthy of your best projects, and so cutting them up for a scrappy quilt sounds like you are making the best use out of that fabric. As long as you use it, who's to determine HOW you use it? It's not snobby to say "this goes here, and that goes there".

You just go, girl!!!!!!!!!

It is the THRILL OF THE HUNT! Now I can understand how a man wants to go hunting - you never know what you will find!

tinliz 03-24-2011 10:32 AM

Great buy on pretty patterns. At least you did not pitch the scraps. That would have been a shame since there are so many quilters who use them.

milp04 03-24-2011 10:37 AM

No you're not a scrap snob.

Instead of cutting up the orphan scraps why don't you find a place to donate the scraps. Organizations such as Project Linus, etc and many others would love to have them for making quilts.

I think searching for the fabric you want for a project is a part of the enjoyment of our quilting projects.

Another idea is to use the fabrics from your aunt and make her a crazy quilt and give some of the scraps back to her in a quilt then she can enjoy some of the fabric she acquired.

If you do not like any of the fabric at all, then find where they will be loved. Either by Pay It Forward boxes/squishy's or making love quilts to donate yourself, or by giving the fabric away where it can be put to good use.

Me? I'll use just about anything. I have a sticker that reads "Fabric Slut" that I got from Cafe Press.

No Quilt police on this board. Some of us are scrappers and some of us are not. I love scrap quilts, but have a hard time using my scraps. It seems that I am a color co-ordinated scrapper. If I decide I cant use my scraps, I will forward them to someone else. I hate waste.

CarrieAnne 03-24-2011 10:59 AM

Love those patterns!

I use to keep my scraps BUT I have found I hold them forever and can't seem to ever use them. So I have found I never use them so now I donate them to my Aunts church group. :)

QuiltnNan 03-24-2011 03:43 PM

i would say that a strip quilt is a good use of fabric you may not want for other projects. not a snob at all.

I give away all fabric I don't like to my kids' schools. They can use them for arts and crafts.

SherriB 03-24-2011 03:48 PM

I don't think it makes you a fabric snob. I love scrappy quilts but really dislike the ones I make for some reason. I still keep my scraps, but I know the odds are against me ever using them. But the grandbabies love to play with them, so maybe that is why.

beckyw 03-24-2011 03:54 PM

Snob no way. I like the hunt also.

This one is OLD! It's like an old 5 & 10 cent store...Wood floors, stuff stacked high....just about everything and anything you'd ever want. I took my MIL, SIL, and nieces there......they LOVED it! I do too! I don't feel so bad about using all the scraps for this project now.....I'll probably finish the quilt and find a loving home for it.

I LOVE Ben Franklin stores! When I visit my little sister in Carson City, Nevada I go to the Ben F. store there! We don't have one here in Oklahoma.

I LOVE the banner wallhangings! Have you had a chance to make one yet? If so, did it turn out like you thought? Was it very large?
