I keep seeing reference to a machines throat size. Can someone explain what this means?

Thanks

The throat (also called the harp) is the distance between the needle and the machine. For example, the new Janome Horizon has an 11" throat.

Throat size is the distance between the needle and across to the body of the machine. It is the opening that allows the fabric to go through. Throat size is important when sewing large items. Does this make sense?

Wow, 11" seem huge. Now I'm curious what my Brother CS-6000i has.

What, I think I misunderstood this. You mean from the needle down to the machine? Or over to the machine?

Over to the machine (to the right of the needle).

Ok, now I get it. How do I measure mine? From where to where?

From the needle to the back of the machine where the fabric feeds through.

Great picture for the explanation Kitsie.

Kitsie, which Pfaff are you getting? I have a four year old 2036 and am seriously considering upgrading....and one big reason is that 11 inches! The 2036 has about 7 inches.
