Thunking sound from Janome 6600
 

Hi everyone! I got a new Janome 6600 earlier this year and I've noticed a pronounced "thunking" sound when I sew at higher speed. It's nice & smooth & quiet as long as I sew slowly, but I like to go fast when I can. Any other Janome owners have this problem?

Mine sometimes does that when it needs cleaned from all the sewing. Have you cleaned your feed dogs lately? Might be worth a shot.

First guesses?
Time for a good cleaning?
New needle needed?
Needle position set too far left or right, so that the needle is hitting against the steel?

It might be time that you get it in for a good servicing ... you might have bent something or may be causing more damage, the more you use it.

It probably needs a thorough cleaning. But when mine did that it was because the thread cutter was out of whack and not going back in to rest position. Quick trip to service man and now she runs like a charm.

Mine does that when the screw on the presser foot has worked loose. I, apparently, don't tighten it enough. Never had it happen on any machine but this one. I think it is the way it feeds.

My Janome 6500 (yours probably does the same) thunks when the small oil wick under the bobbin case dries out. Add a drop of oil in there and the thunk disappears. No where in the manual does it tell you to oil it there. I also had my machine back to the dealer several times for service and nothing was ever said about this. I finally found out about it from reading on the Janome 6500/6600 forum which was a wealth of information. Don't try to pull that wick out (it's not lint) just drop in a little oil. If you take out your bobbin case, clean under there and then add the oil, I bet your thunk will disappear.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I've been pretty good about keeping my machine clean and I did just oil the wick for the first time, just one drop though. It's been "thunking" since day one. Later this morning I'll go back and clean and oil it again and if that doesn't help will take it in for service. I've noticed that when I change needles the little arm you insert the needle into is wiggly, but is stable after I screw the needle in. Wonder if that is the problem?

Before you pay for a service that shouldn't be needed until 12 months after you bought it ask for an engineer to look at it under the terms of the insurance - parts and labor should be free for the first year.

I hope you're able to get rid of the thunk. Many times when my machine doesn't sound right, it needs the lint cleaned out of the bobbin area and a little oil added.
