Is yarn ok to tie a quilt? I don't if it is strong enough.

AlwaysQuilting 09-18-2011 10:59 AM

My grandmother tied quilts with either yarn or 6 strands of embroidery floss.

Embroidery floss is much nicer and doesn't look as bad as yarn when it frays.

I used crochet cotton or thread.

get a good cotton yarn..stays knotted better! Also practice your knotting before you start...

Glassquilt 09-18-2011 11:12 AM

Don't use a square knot. Use a surgeon's knot. Square knots can come apart fairly easily. When you pull an end it straightens out and the other piece can slide off. Great for temporary tie downs but deadly in a life & death situation.

I have several quilts tied with yarn. If I were to tie one I would use a surgeon's knot as well.

Surgeon's knot explained. Best way to tie a quilt. I use pearl cotton to tie mine.

I also wondered how you do a surgeons knot. I usually take a stich then take another stich and then tie. I have used yarn and also emb thread. Leave ends long enough, too short makes it come out easier. Will keep watching this thread for answer to surgeons knot. BrendaK

There are several tutorials on "how to tie a quilt" if you google the topic.

I have quilts that my grandmother made ages ago - and the ties are still intact.

quiltingme 09-18-2011 12:54 PM

Thanks nanacsews2. That was a good tutorial.

blueangel 09-18-2011 01:20 PM

I use crochet thread.

Painiacs 09-18-2011 03:17 PM

I use emb thread. Blends in better I think.

Painiacs 09-18-2011 03:23 PM

There was another tute there on how to tie was put thru loops! Kinda cool!!

I have tied many quilts with yarn and there are some that are still around after 30 + yrs. I would not use yarn on a baby quilt because of the fuzzies but the others will be great. That is what I learned to do many years ago from my wonderful grandma.

cabbagepatchkid 09-19-2011 05:43 AM

I have used 6 strand embroidery thread to tie a quilt. It works alright but I've had them untie during washing. I will have to check out how to make that surgeons knot.

My grandmother used yarn to tie her quilts. They are still holding tight some 40 yrs later and so are her quilts  even though we use them all the time.

I just tied a quilt this weekend. I use the larger skein of DMC that people use for crewel embroidery (it's 27 yds). Works great and looks good. I always tie with a square knot and a half hitch thrown on top for good measure...

Kayaker26 09-19-2011 05:55 AM

I have used both, embrodry thread is MUCH easier!

Me too. I have also used crochet cotton-doubled-and they have held up well over the years. When I used embroidery floss it sometimes came untied in the wash.
