Tip for the binding tool...
If you own/use one of the binding/piping machines you probably hate having to stick the fabric in the tip. Here is an idea I came up with and emailed to my quilting friend and thought I would share it here.
I have been binding 8 of the quilts I have quilted.. I already had the binding made for 6 of the UFO's but had two to make. Out came the binding machine for its maiden run. It was a pain getting the fabric into the binding tip. By the time I got the first one threaded I decided this was not a time saver at all! But then a light bulb came on as the first one was running through. I stopped it when there was about 8 inches still unpressed and whip stitched the 2nd binding to the end and rolled it onto the roller. Voila.....no trying to get the fabric into that tip. Before the last binding threaded all the way through, I got a 8 inch scrap strip and whip stitched it to the end of the binding then ran the machine until the scrap was through the tip but still had a tail. I snipped the threads to the binding and left the scrap piece in the tip. I will never have to try to get fabric into the tip again! Now it is a time saver! Hope you find this helpful, Marilyn |
Thanks. I use the binding machine for all my bindings.

thanks for the tip

Good idea..like a leader/ender!

I use the binding machine all the time. My tip is to use spray starch on the first 3" to 4", get it good and stiff and it will push right in!

Does anyone have a link to a place to purchase this binding tool?
|
It was the Simplicity Bias Tape Maker. It has been discontinued. They are available online at hugely inflated prices. You may just have to keep your eyes open for one. Its a great machine if you can get it. Good Luck.

Would you please post a picture of the binding machine? I don't have ever even herd of this tool. I do have some of the various sizes for making bias strips, but the binding tool is new to me. Thanks

Gee I don't think I need one if it's the machine I saw that is on sale at Amazon and Ebay for $600. plus.

So many bought one and then gave it a bad review. Most didn't know how to use it in the first place and declared it not worth the money. It's a great machine. You can buy the bigger tip for 2 1/2" binding. I use it for straight single fold binding and bias binding. I take left over 2 1/2 strips and run through the machine. When I want scrappy binding I join the strips of batting I have already made. I saw two of the machines at Walmart in the craft section last time I was there. I guess I need to go back and get them if they are still available.

Some machines have a Quilt Binding set, like Janome. Another option that's cheaper if you have a Bernina is to buy the 70/71 flat fell foot. There is a video on line. I still need to sew a whole binding on a quilt, but tried it at the dealer and it works great.

Wow, for $500, I can make a lot of bias tape on my ironing board and buy lots of material. I can't imagine that this machine would be that useful. How much was it in the beginning before it got those gouging prices?
The same thing happened to me when I needed a portable CD player. I couldn't find mine while I was healing up from being sick and decided to just buy another one. The CD player I bought from Sony when it was new at $40, was now going for $100 used and $600 new. I did end up buying one for $100 (used) and it served my purpose. However, after I got healed up and was looking for something else, I found my CD player. Murphy's Law working really well. |
Thanks for sharing!

I think I paid about $50 for mine when it first came out. I went to Walmart today and there was one left on the bottom shelf in the notion dept. It was on clearance for $25. I bought it for a back up. Mine is getting old. I have found if you go to a smaller town Walmart a lot of the items not in the bigger stores are still on the shelf. I have two Walmart close to me. One in a smaller town and one in the larger town. The smaller town one seems to have the can't find anymore items. I think they keep them until they sell all of them. Don't restock as much.
I wanted to buy a Walkman. I wanted to listen to local radio stations while walking. I couldn't fine one anywhere like the original with the good radio. |
