So here we are Monday morning. Way to early for me to see straight yet. Good thing I do t need to. I was going to wait til a bit later but as they say there is no time like the present. So I will make sure that there is a link to here. And then we will figure out the best way for each of you to cut your projects to suit you and what you are making. There is a few differnt things. Some want to make a wall banging to full size quilts. We want to make sure this is as easy and as pain free for everyone as I can. There is a number of ways to go about it and hope to hit on as many as we can. Pictures are greatly appreciated. I would love to see everyones work and some rimes they will make it easier if I am needed for suggestions.

I plan to make a hexigon I spy quilt this summer or fall. I'm in a flannel I spy swap on this board and I'll get my 5" squares later in the spring. I'm looking forward to your tutorial. Thanks.

cutebuns 02-01-2010 07:53 AM

So first need to find out many repeats we have to decide the best way to cut them. The ones that are utilizing the ones in the width as well the length will be cutting a bit differently that those using strictly the length wise ones.

gailmitchell 02-01-2010 08:03 AM

So, this method wouldn't work well for charms then, right?

cutebuns 02-01-2010 08:04 AM

Right. We are doing a pieced hexagon.

Panther Creek Quilting 02-01-2010 08:28 AM

So are people cutting their fabric now? I am wanting to follow along and thought maybe I missed a "thread" change?

Sheila

cutebuns 02-01-2010 08:32 AM

We will be cutting today. At least I will.

Panther Creek Quilting 02-01-2010 08:34 AM

Very Cool! Watching and waiting for the steps to follow along later. Thank you so much for doing this!

Sheila

cutebuns 02-01-2010 08:35 AM

Not a problem. I enjoy helping others.

mimisharon 02-01-2010 08:38 AM

I will be checking back, too, lots I want to get done but I want to go step by step with you so I don't get lost.

You do such a good job of teaching. Thank you

cutebuns 02-01-2010 08:42 AM

You won't get lost Sharon. Just send up a flare if you need to.

amma 02-01-2010 10:02 AM

WooHoo!!! I am starching my fabrics right now :D:D:D
Two more cups of coffee and I will be ready to start cutting

cutebuns 02-01-2010 10:04 AM

I am moving slow, I have to clear a spot on my table yet, yes I am working along with you all! it is easier that way, I can stop and take a picture if need be and if I work ahead I may not have the right one and have to back track. I was playing with the idea of doing more than one, since I have a week to get them all to the next point. I have so many ideas after seeing everyones fabrics.

cutebuns 02-01-2010 10:52 AM

So here is my fabric that I will be using today, I have 19 repeats so now I have to decide how many I will be using and how,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 10:59 AM

Since I don't want a huge quilt, I am going to use 12 of the repeats, so I am going to count 12 and cut an inch or two longer just to make sure I get the full repeat in,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 11:09 AM

1 Attachment(s)
so I went and cut off where I needed to and then split the fabric in half length wise, I will be working with half of the fabric at a time, depending on where you are getting your repeats from, you may be doing this differently,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 11:10 AM

if I was to use this piece, it is smaller but I can still get 6 repeats out it if I cut it correctly, so it would make a good wall hanging or doll quilt or something of the sorts.

deranged_damsel 02-01-2010 11:36 AM

Cutebuns
so I can cut my width in half and then length in three?

Im afraid of cutting up the fabric wrong, I dont know where on the repeat I want to cut. are the triangles cut best lined up on a grain? or I can turn it whatever way to get the pattern? what size is best for a sixinch repeat?

I figure I will try to follow along with your posts the best I can, but it may take longer for me, being this is my first wbo. if Im being a pest or get behind I guess I can watch and learn, then do this some other time.

Im so EXCITED! especially to see everyones blocks

cutebuns 02-01-2010 11:42 AM

We are only working with half of the fabric, if you are using repeats out of the width you need to cut those on the repeat as well, half usually isn't on the repeat, we have as little as possible in the scrap bin,

can you post a picture with the width and at least 2 repeats lengthwise? then I can show you what I mean,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 11:43 AM

ASk as many questions as it take to make it clear, that is what I am here for,

THe pattern on the fabric has to line up with each other when you stack it.

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:08 PM

So I looked for something easy to line the ruler up with, I want to make it easy to find, and so here is where I start, I want to see what it looks like as I have to do it a few more times, you can cut the little piece off if you would like, I just left mine on

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:17 PM

1 Attachment(s)
so then I move the ruler along and match it to what I saw in the start, if you cut that little piece off you can move it and match it where you cut to make sure that you are in the same place, but if you pick an obvious spot to line you your fabric it is easier, some prints are easier as well.

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:21 PM

so then I get a piece like this and need 5 more

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:24 PM

So now I have 6 pieces of fabric that all look the same, and I am ready to start stacking them,

BKinCO 02-01-2010 12:32 PM

Just checking in quick, will have to catch up tomorrow. I'm trying to finish up a few projects so I can concentrate on the OBW :)

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:37 PM

Great!

cutebuns 02-01-2010 12:39 PM

so if I was doing a wall hanging, I may want to cut my fabric like this, not all of the repeats are straight across, some are staggered, still can get my repeats (some are straight across)

Kyiav10 02-01-2010 01:15 PM

Cutebuns, I am so sorry but I am confused already. I don' understand about finding a place to cut it. I understand about leaving about 2" extra but how do I cut it. My rulers are not long enough. I am going to have to look at my fabric b/c I don't know if I have a repeat in the WOF or not. I'm so sorry I get lost easily.

Ok I looked back at the photo I have posted. I have a staggered repeat in the WOF also. Now what do I do b/c I wanted to make a nice size quilt, not just a wall hanging?

Kyia

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:18 PM

can you show me the fabric? and then I can draw lines etc for you, and if you don't have a long enough ruler for this there are other things like a yard stick or anything that has a long enough straight edge for it,

make sure you get a fair piece of the fabric if you can as well as the edge,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:19 PM

Even if you have to draw the lines on and cut it with scissors it will work at this point.

amma 02-01-2010 01:20 PM

staggering your repeats like that will give you more variations in the hexagons, right?

Kyiav10 02-01-2010 01:21 PM

Here is the pic from the other post.

I dont own a yeard stick. I also bought a triangle ruler today. Can you post a pic so I can tell if I bought the right one?

Kyia

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:21 PM

no it won't it just means that you don't need as much fabric if you are making a wall hanging. to get the most variation, you need to have at least two wide and two lengthwise

Kyiav10 02-01-2010 01:23 PM

Do you mean I need to have at least two repeats WOF and lengthwise? I have this. Is the other person right that it will just give me more variation. I have 3 yards of this so I dont think I will have to cut out the repeatns just the lengthwise.

So sorry for my confusion.

I will have to count the repeats in the length when I get home. But I think I can get at least 6 WOF pieces.

the more that you can get lengthwise the better, with the perspective I have, (not sure just where the edge looks like,) I have marked some repeats,

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:40 PM

The third line is a little off at the top, but see how the first two disects the middle of the same flower? pick one particular thing to find through out your print,

mimisharon 02-01-2010 01:42 PM

OK, I'm home and I'm going into the sewing room, starch and iron my fabric again. Then I'll come take the laptop in there before I begin cutting. I'm askeered I'll mess up that pretty fabric, but it will work some sorta way, right?

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:45 PM

It will work Sharon, before cutting if you show the edge as well with a fair amount of the print I can help draw you lines to give an idea where you could be cutting. (don't forget to cound your repeats, and if you don't have 6 lengthwise, find the width ones as well

cutebuns 02-01-2010 01:52 PM

This is what my ruler looks like, though there are different ones on the market, some will be using their regular ruler, and if there isn't an 60 degree mark on it a piece of tape and protractor can solve that.

krazy4quilts 02-01-2010 02:08 PM

so on the lines you did for Kyiav is where she should cut?that width. On my fabric its a staggered repeat.
