It is really hard to tell you how much to buy as it totally varies with the size of repeat and how big you cut your pieces, obviously the smaller the cut the less the fabric will go, the seams take up a bunch. So you all are going to be there in the LQS counting and measuring repeats and multiplying it by six until you have hopefully what size you want.
I can't wait to see where everyone goes after they finish this first one. |
Just to say I'm SO GLAD I'm not having to choose between your quilts. I'm loving them all.
Cutebuns: Those tumbling grapes are amazing. To me it's like a dance, moving out from the ring of grapes with the one leaf in the centre, whirling outwards into the green leaves and back to the tempting fruit again! Yum. Mimisharon: Loving your blues, with the triangles twisting through them. Hat off to you for sticking with it, it looks now as if it was meant to be this way. deranged_damsel: How cool!!! A leap into something else and it works just so well. And congratulations on getting your boy in shape as well... :D Greencat: Welcome to the sandbox! :D Cutebuns is a great tutor, isn't she. Drew me out as well. I like your blocks, very subtle. Mimisharon's doesn't have a lot of contrast either and to me it's not a drawback at all. I think yours are both lovely. Meanwhile, back in the rain... My machine is back and I'm now sewing feverishly to catch up. And I'm getting the "oh no everyone else's is much nicer than mine" phase now  ! Hope I'll get over it. |
salmonsweet said it all so I don't have to! :-D
Seriously, everyone's are looking great. And I just might have to copy that star layout damsel! |

Here are some very preliminary pictures of my black and cream blocks. I'm not done at all because...
Big blocks Small blocks |

I'm still playing with a wish for combining them, either the small around the big in a sort of frame, or perhaps with a diagonal sash between them...
(note my elegant sock  ) Starting to go around |
Salmonsweet! That is beautiful! Do you still have a whole piece of your fabric that you could post or have you already and I missed it? DH and I spent about an hour wandering thru the fabric aisles yesterday looking at fabrics "with a different eye." I may be able to get rid of some of my resources (used to be called stash) by just cutting them up to see how they will look, no matter how big the repeat! My fingers will be busy today!

salmon those are fantastisch! and your sock looks cosy too! ;-)

A picture of my original fabric is in the cutting thread, here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-35685-31.htm#793584 |
Beautiful fabric! I have a fairly small repeat fabric that I have had forever, it was originally used in my first quilt, Trip Around The World, kingsize. I way over bought because I loved it! I am going to do a test on it today just to see how it will look, just a few blocks! Another piece of resource gone!
Stash - Put away in secret . . . hidden Resources - A source of supply, support, or aid, esp one that can be readily drawn upon when needed |
Everyone, your creations are turning out beautifully.

I think your top looks GREAT, that is how I want my next one to look. |
Everyone's is so great!! I think I am going o borrow the star idea too. it'll make my quilt more square and a little bigger since I didn't have much fabric for the actual OBW blocks .... I'll post pics once I get my extra triangles cut and arranged!

Dear DerangedDamsel,
Hi, it is a Blank Textiles Fabric. I bought it about 2 1/2 years ago at a fabric shop which tends to carry older fabrics. I bought all they had with the intention to make a stack n whack or one block wonder. I have attached pics of the salvage. This may help you. Hope this helps. I don't know the name. I checked Blank Textiles and couldn't find it there. |

The blocks are great!!!!!!!
The print may be a bit small, it depends on how big you want the strips to be cut, I like the color though. |
Please recommend how wide I should cut my strips and that's what I will do.
|
You should be able to get away with a 2 1/4 inch strip, maybe as big as 2 1/2 but that I think is pushing it, so they will be small,
|
deranged_damsel I love the way you have your blocks layed out!!! Awesome pattern, it is so bright and cheery and colorful :D:D:D
Salmonsweet, I really like the color play of your blocks and lay out too!!! Such a stunning quilt :D:D:D buffy2, I love the 2 fabric idea!!! I am doing this too  I really like your lay out!!! That is beautiful :D:D:D I am done sewing the darker fabrics that I have cut, will be starting on the lighter fabric tomorrow Woo Hoo :D:D:D |
There's a LQS on the way to retreat, maybe I will look for another fabric there tomorrow.
|
WOW! thanks everyone for the compliments
looking back on it now.. I dont think my fabric was the best choice to follow Cutes intructions. The stripes made hexs that were just TO different and some EXACTLY the same. I couldnt get them to blend. Im just glad it turned out, that goes to show that ANY quilt, ANY mistakes can be rescued and turn out lovely. |

|
Looking good Amma!
|
It is lovely
|
Ahhhhhh-you're all doing such a nice job with the designs.
This has been a busy week. I just finished sewing and pressing all of the blocks. I think I have about 110+ hexagons. Thank goodness I can hit the sack and look at them with fresh eyes tomorrow :-) I will take pictures this weekend. Most of my blocks from the Asian print are different. This has been so much fun to make along with each of my friends on the board. Thanks!!!! |
