tips for FMQ with minky backing

I have had some fun FMQ lately everything has been going great! Today I have 2 couch throw size quilts I want to quilt to today - but they have minky backing

I am having a really hard time moving the quilt around because of the minky - its really dragging

I have my machingers gloves on and that wasn't enough. I got one of those sponges with the SOS pad backing (pot scrubber) that is helping alot, but I am still struggling

I only have about 1/4 of the first one done, but I don't know if I can keep going long enough to do the second one

Anyone have any tips?

Thanks!

Is it because the Minky is heavy or is it sticking rather then sliding? If it is sticking, I would put sheets of tissue paper under the Minky and quilt through it, the tissue paper would be easy to pull off after the quilting.

thanks for your reply - I am sure you are right about the weight. Minky is heavier than cotton. Thanks for the tissue paper idea - I think I will give it a try :)

I use a Supreme slider and Machingers and have not had a problem with FMQ on minky backed quilts. My DSM is recessed in a sewing cabinet so doesn't hang up on edges. On larger quilts I have set up my ironing along side the cabinet to help support the weight. I don't know what your set-up is, just thought I'd share mine. I hope you can find a method that works for you, the kids love their minky backed quilts.

I would use the sticky spray like 505? for the next quilt. That might help.

A fabric adhesive spray (like 505) is a great suggestion. Take your machine to the kitchen table, so you have a place to support the weight of the fabric. You can always set up an ironing board on your left side, for the fabric to hang onto.
