You need the steel wool type to sharpen the pins. Some pincushion patterns I've seen just call for polyfill though.

I have a Babylock and they have a website that has directions for gifts etc. There are some very quick and nice things there.
Other sewing machines probably have a similar part to their website.
Do be sure to have permission if you use copyrighted designs.
