DebQuilter50 06-29-2011 06:23 AM

Over the last two days I spent every spare minute I had working on a quick lap quilt. Last night I sandwiched the quilt and started basting. The best way I can describe what happened is that it was a mess. I knew I had to tear it out and start over with the sandwich making process. I was tired and discouraged. I put it away, had a glass of wine, and got a good night's sleep. This morning I took out the basting and started over. It is now pinned and ready to be machine quilted. It is a new day and I feel much better.

Just wanted to share this with people that understand.

It is a good feeling to get a problem straightened out and the quilt on it's way to being finished. I can never leave a known mistake in my quilt either. You made a good choice to wait until today to finish it, though.

Cherylsea 06-29-2011 06:27 AM

It is good to know when to stop for the night! I have tried to "keep going" and usually just make a more dreadful mess! Glad your new day is being productive.

lisalovesquilting 06-29-2011 06:32 AM

You were smart to stop and go again in the morning. Glad it worked out for you.

DawnMarie 06-29-2011 06:32 AM

I've had those days too!

irishrose 06-29-2011 06:53 AM

I just got stuck laying out the 'jewels' in my Jewel Box quilt that has to be finished in a week, so I feel for you. I think I've decided on a layout now, so I'm off to get at it, too.

TonnieLoree 06-29-2011 06:56 AM

Sometimes you just have to walk away.

Kuusistoquilter 06-29-2011 07:03 AM

Sometime you have to walk away from a project when things aren't going right. When I have to rip out stitching twice, since I repeated the error a second time, I know it is time to shut off the machine and walk out of the sewing room. I get frustrated sometimes doing PP and need to put it away for a while.

I find it always helps when I "wine"...LOL

tazzyjj 06-29-2011 07:55 AM

A glass of wine is always such a relaxer...keep it close by!!

bearisgray 06-29-2011 07:59 AM

I'm glad you got it fixed -

and you will be so much happier with it when it's done that you took the time "to do it right"

blueangel 06-29-2011 08:13 AM

Sometimes you have to just walk away andtry again later.

Painiacs 06-29-2011 09:30 AM

Been there done that! Glad u got some sleep!!

emerald46 06-29-2011 10:03 AM

Wine and sleep can make all the difference! It took me ages to realize I really have no business working on my projects after 10pm...something frustrating always happens.

Jingle 06-29-2011 10:54 AM

I usually just keep going, I am not always smart enough to just stop and start over the next day. I just keep plugging along. Good for you to know when to stop.

DebbyT 06-29-2011 02:49 PM

I do understand. For me, bed time is when I finish ripping out my mistake, or 1:00 am. Going to bed at 1:00 am means I had a productive evening. If I am on a roll, it is even later.

craftybear 06-29-2011 04:03 PM

glad you went to bed and got some rest

tntgranny 06-30-2011 03:18 AM

It's amazing how a good night's sleep can put a whole new perspective on the world around us.

TootieAnn 06-30-2011 03:21 AM

I've been there too! Glad you're feeling better today! Have a great one!

katyquilter 06-30-2011 04:07 AM

I always call my daughter when I get into a fix - she just says "walk away from the machine" .. it always is better after a good night's sleep.

QuiltMom2 06-30-2011 04:17 AM

You're so smart! Sometimes you just have to look at it again in the morning.

quiltaroni 06-30-2011 04:36 AM

Oh we do understand, we all have experiences like that.

quiltaroni 06-30-2011 04:37 AM

dinlauren 06-30-2011 05:05 AM

Glad you were able to walk away...I had a terrible experience last week and just couldn't seem to get it right or walk away....finally i had to put it up and wait for the next day to work on it....it turned out well after that...so i totally understand.

mhansen6 06-30-2011 06:19 AM

I have found that trying to quilt when you are tired just doesn't work. You solved the problem exactly like I would have. A glass of wine and a good night's sleep.

grammysharon 06-30-2011 06:24 AM

I've done the same thing. Sometimes it is better to quit when you are bone-tired and get a fresh start the next morning

:-D

latebloomerar 06-30-2011 06:28 AM

Rest is always a good plan! But I also know that when the wine starts the precision stops so I am done for the night. LOL

Mariposa 06-30-2011 06:43 AM

A good night of sleep can do wonders for you! Glad your new day has positive results! :)

teacherbailey 06-30-2011 08:16 AM

Never do anything when you're tired! I've learned that the hard way....miscutting beloved fabrics, cutting myself with the rotary cutter, mismeasuring, not being as careful about 1/4" seam allowance....you name it, I've done it. Now I don't sew after supper unless I'm on a deadline and am really clear on what I'm going to do and how! (However, I am a BIG morning person, so 6AM is a fine time for me to sew! If you're a night owl, my "after supper" timing might just be your best time!)

Olivia's Grammy 06-30-2011 09:43 AM

Understand is what we do. Most of us have made all the mistake that everyone is talking about.

donnalynett 06-30-2011 11:02 AM

I find if things go wrong first thing in the morning then everything else goes wrong all day. That's when I just walk away from it and drown my sorrows in coffee.

grandjan 06-30-2011 12:31 PM

Oh boy, do I understand!

Sandra in Minnesota 06-30-2011 01:57 PM

I have found it very hard for anything to turn out, when I am tired. It's best to give up, have a glass of wine and go to bed. Things always look better in the morn.

Tweety2911 06-30-2011 03:43 PM

Good thing you had a good nights rest to tackle the issue refreshed!

IBQUILTIN 06-30-2011 04:54 PM

I do understand. and I am glad for you that you waited for another day

DebQuilter50 06-30-2011 06:56 PM

Thanks - I knew you would all understand.

Ditto!

Tinabug 06-30-2011 08:19 PM

There! I knew it, an excuse for having a nice glass of wine!! Sometimes we just have to put away the problem, feet up, nice little stem of wine, and put it to bed. The morning is always better.

kittiebug 07-01-2011 02:01 AM
