TN Donna 11-25-2010 09:16 PM

Since I had my Thanksgiving dinner Saturday I had the whole day to sew-yes all day. I made four table runners and got two of them quilted. I cut these out by hand. Every square, triangle and strip. I wish I could do pictures but I am not able to right now. I am on a borrowed computer and do not have things all hooked up. I am telling you I made one up in my go-as you-cut style and made it for my daughter. It is in greens and a yellow/orange Afternoon Tea print and it is beautiful. If they were my colors she would never know I made it for her.

I used to sew and quilt, but I have had two real bad head injuries from falls in the past 5 years and things are slowly coming back to me. I knew when I started quilting that I had done it before. I just knew how to handle the material and all too easily. It was so much fun.

A whole day to sew....I am so jealous.

Mary M 11-25-2010 09:21 PM

Good to hear you are able to go back to your quilting. When I had chemo. it damaged some of my nerves. I really think that quilting has been good physical therapy for the nerve damage. I still drop things but I have been having an easier time of sewing. It definitely is good to keep using what we have a good chance of improving what has been damaged.

cjomomma 11-25-2010 09:23 PM

Oh wow! It must have been nice to sew all day. I started having withdrawals being away from home today. I was wishing I had taken some things with me to work on.

We had our Thanksgiving yesterday (Wed.) and I had all day to sew too...but I didn't. Watched football and messed around on the computer. A REAL day off for me.

Colorful Quilter 11-25-2010 09:52 PM

I too was able to sew today as my daughter was doing the turkey dinner at her house for us in the evening...Great day in all, except when we got ready to leave her house my car was covered in a dusting of wet snow, bummer!! I moved from MI to TN to get away from the white stuff. Happy Thanksgiving to all

janRN 11-26-2010 05:58 AM

Yay Donna! Doesn't it feel good to do something so beautiful and have a whole day to do it? I envy you just cutting and sewing--I'm too anal-I have to have some direction. Glad your sewing memory is back and hope all will be. Today is my day to sew all day-machine this am and then hand sewing in front of the tv with football on later. Anxious to see pics when you get a chance.

scowlkat 11-26-2010 06:17 AM

Donna, so happy to hear that things are coming back to you! I am green with envy with the thought of a whole day to yourself to sew.

mom-6 11-26-2010 06:26 AM

Took my quilting with me to DD's house for Thanksgiving. Got a little bit done on it, not much. Did get a chance to show a friend who was also there how to use my sewing machine that's at DD's house, which was a treat. She's going to borrow it next week for a project she's working on.

hannajo 11-26-2010 08:07 AM

That's great TN Donna about your skills coming back to you. When/if you are able, if you ever get things hooked up, I would love to see pics of your stuff. I know I would never be able to post pics if my husband didn't transfer the pics from the camera to the computer.

Mariposa 11-26-2010 08:47 AM

Donna, I'm glad to hear you are enjoying "getting back" into quilting! Sounds like you have been busy sewing up a storm.
Would love to see some pics of your projects! :)

Donna, glad to hear you are getting better. Hope each day brings more improvements. Would love to see pictures if it works out later.

What is your go as you cut style quilting. Sounds interesting and fast. I am all for getting things done quickly, as I love to see the finished designs.

BettyGee 11-27-2010 07:20 AM

Way to go Donna! May you continue to heal. They tell me at the cancer center that "Love Heals." I believe that and I also believe that quilting gives us a feeling of peace when we create beautiful things.

CarrieAnne 11-27-2010 07:28 AM

Lucky you, what a FUN day!

MerryQuilter 11-27-2010 07:49 AM

I love football! It's my time to sew with the sound of the game in the background and my loved ones home. Ahhh...

I am so happy to hear that you are getting your skills back. Just take it slowly and you will do fine. Congratulations! Jan

i so understand the head injuries. i also had 2 TBIs one was brain surgery. lost 30 years of my memory. so glad my grandmother taught me to sew when i was a kid. that and my ability to do bead work and other crafts. all came back but it was slow going. hang in there and keep doing. the more you do the more will come back.
sending you healing energy and prayers.

Good for you!!! Your table runners sound beautiful! A lady in my sewing group at our church had two bad falls that limited some of her abilities. She can no longer drive. When she joined our sewing/quilting group, she had to really focus to do it. But as she has used those skills it has become much easier for her. Sounds like it is for you too!

I agree LOVE does heal. ((((HUGS)))))
I also think being creative is very healing.

Dee 11-27-2010 09:15 PM

Blessings to you Donna. Hope you continue to improve and many happy stitches ahead.

LoriMcc 11-28-2010 02:25 PM

Good for you! Doing the Happy Dance! :-D

Drew 11-28-2010 03:46 PM

At one time, I was able to do handwork where I worked. I was at the gatehouse to a state facility. When it was slow, I'd work on my cross stitch or read. I told everyone it was the only job that paid me to read and stitch!! (LOL) Hopefully, next time you'll remember to take something with you.

The only way I can take pictures of projects right now, is with my cell phone, then I send them to my email as a picture message. From the email, I grab and drop them to my desk top, then I can upload them on here. The pictures it takes aren't great, but hey I'm a quilter, not a photographer! I hope this is helpful. Happy Holidays!

omak 11-29-2010 07:12 PM

What a marvelous testimony!
I am grateful that you are re-gaining some of your abilities and that you have had the courage to keep working at it, trying to accomplish something. Good job!
We are all on your side and anxious to hear more of your journey and accomplishments! <wave>

madamekelly 11-29-2010 07:25 PM

I also suffered a head injury and am relearning things. Isn't it wonderful that we can relearn things that we enjoyed. Congratulations, and keep going. Happy Holidays!

Well, good for you!
It takes a lot of time and courage and patience to relearn things, and you have every right to be proud of your effort.
You probably enjoy, more than most, the whole process of our chosen craft. Keep up the good work!<wave>
