I just bought 15 today at the consignment store for $10. There are three of each 5 prints. You can never have too many fat quarters. Something will inspire you.

Rose Bagwell 08-24-2011 11:12 AM

I would go for scrappy.

hlponyfarm 08-24-2011 11:12 AM

I just made a Twin Sisters lap quilt with fat Quarters. i love fat quarters. especially when JoAnn/s has them on sale for .99c.

vmhlake 08-24-2011 11:22 AM

I always use the 'Turning Twenty' patterns for my fat quarters, it takes 20 fat quarters and they make beautiful quilts!

pbreon 08-24-2011 11:31 AM

Hay Gang.... Did she say TOO MANY!!!!!

JusticeClan 08-24-2011 11:34 AM

I'm making a disappearing 9 patch throw with mine to use this winter. Real country look.

Latrinka 08-24-2011 12:25 PM

Do What? Maybe you could trade them for some skinny quarters! Just Joking! LOL!

Sharonsews 08-24-2011 12:53 PM

Disappearing 9 patch as someone mentioned is a great idea...also Turning Twenty...that's my suggestion

Christmas is coming \ I made bags for sunday school
for class, I made teachers sockings, tree skirt for
sister and brother, church sectary a book cover for bible.
I added some christnas trim on some rick rack, ribbon,
gold and silver trims. Last year - I made kids at grandson's
school bags for the books mom's put 2 books in each also
gave the neighbors children. I was surpised how well fabric
and trim made them look like christmas, and for kids any
colorful fabric not christmas to use all year.
Some christmas fabric, mostly used fabric of all kinds to use
everyday. - This year my mother in law is in nursing home and I will try to fix them something.

luckylindy333 08-24-2011 01:22 PM

I would sort them by color, pick out two colors that go together or oppose each other on the color wheel, like red and green or purple and orange, then make a scrappy quilt! There you go!!!

nanquilt 08-24-2011 01:25 PM

I agree

sparkys_mom 08-24-2011 01:58 PM

This thread has inspired me to make one of those puzzle quilts. Having some electrical work done today and was exiled from my sewing room so I spent the afternoon cutting the pieces. Now I'm just laying them out.

auntdeb 08-24-2011 02:37 PM

I would use them on scrapy quilts too. I love them. The scrapier the better. String piece on paper.

playswithcolor 08-24-2011 02:47 PM

How can one have too many fat quarters?

If you are stuck, pull out a color wheel and choose a color scheme. Then go to your FQ stash and sort out the colors you need. Pull a variety of values of each color. Then get cutting.....

If you have lots of different colors maybe a twister quilt would be fun. You need some contrast between squares when you make it.

For those-" why did I buy it FQs" cut them up for a block that has some small pieces.... It's amazing how uglies plus a solid (red, black, etc) can make stunning quilts.

carslo 08-24-2011 03:24 PM

Try the wickedly easy quilt it is designed for fat quarters!

starshine 08-24-2011 03:24 PM

I have seen a couple of books at my library -Fat quarter quilts and Fat quarter quilts 2, so there must be patterns out there that use them. Haven't read all the posts but Yellow Brick Road is based on fqs and I think a couple other patterns are too.

Thanks for your opinions.

May I suggest the International Fabric Swap that Carsey is hosting. We're exchaning FQs world wide. See the Swap section for more details.

I'm in the same boat you are, so here's an opportunity for you. I'm doing a Fat Quarter Stars Quilt Along on this site, it's just starting. http://moosequilts.blogspot.com/ Her QA's are alot of fun! Try it.

Now this one seems like it would be for me - not too difficult to do and easily understood. I am a beginner quilter and have trouble reading patterns yet, so this tut is very helpful.
Thanks, tinliz

I collect fqs. I sort by color blue. green burg, brown I cut them up in 4.5 squares . when i have a small tub i put them to gather. I have a long arm quilt them. then i put 3 borders on. hand quilt or machine quilt the borders with my embroidery machine. border 1 is 5" the 2nd is 8 to 10" appliqued, pieced. the the 3rd is 5" the same as the b-1 this makes the quilt very cheap but a nice queen size. i will dig some pictures out. the long are operators have got so expensive. Im still addicted to quilting. susie

Could they be arranged for a bargollo?

IAmCatOwned 08-24-2011 08:02 PM

There are many books and patterns that use fat quarters. Look through them. I'm sure your fat quarters would MOSTLY fall into 4 piles that go together. You just have to work out what those piles are.

I too have a large fat quarter collection (many from a New Years Day door prize). So, I get where you are coming from. I have made 2 fat quarter quilts from them already. I traded ones I absolutely couldn't use for something that I could use.

vschieve 08-24-2011 10:17 PM

I fall for them too and have collected them. Signed up for a class tomorrow "Krazy Kurves" and supply list calls for 20 fat quarters! I almost didn't make it! Imagine that. Anyway looking forward to it. The sample quilt made up in the quilt store is a king size and done in batiks. It is gorgeous.

Here is a good site to check for FREE PATTERNS
http://www.fatquartershop.com/freequiltpattern.asp

Thanks. I love finding new free patterns.

What a great problem to have. There are many inspring ideas on the web and in this board. There are also magazines that are devoted to scrap quilting. If you have a few that go together, make a table cover or runner. Do you have daughters/granddaughters/friends with daughters? make doll quilts. Good luck and have fun!

Joyce Ann 08-25-2011 10:49 AM

I have made sudoku quilts from them

Margie13 08-25-2011 11:52 AM

Turning twenty is a great quilt to make for fat quarters.
I have made a few of them.

Annaleehunter 08-26-2011 04:25 AM

Never heard of a sudoku quilt! Will have to look it up!

I made a Bento Box quilt for DMIL.. I used everything from Civil War to Batiks.

As long as you can match the fabrics into pairs, you'll be just fine!

I bought too many FQ on a Shop Hop last year so I used several of them and made a patch work purse/tote. The pattern is in the Spring 2010 issue of Quilts and More on page 26. It was very easy plus I learned how to make Prairie Points in the process. So I made another one the next day.
The pattern doesn't even use much of each FQ so you'll have plenty left over to make something else. Go for it.

jpthequilter 08-26-2011 07:47 PM

Your avitar is an lovely applique. I like fat quarters to make them. Perhaps you could plan some large plants or floral themes, or town scenes - in appliqued wall hangings to use them up?

brendadawg 08-27-2011 01:43 AM

The Turning Twenty patterns are great for this. There might also be some central theme you'll find in a group of the FQ.
